Eggs

No, it is not.

Floating an egg will only tell you how old it might be.
They float due to evaporation when older.
It will not tell you if an egg is 'good' or 'bad'.
Plus then you've wetted the egg so it should be thoroughly washed and refrigerated.
When in doubt....
Open eggs one at a time in a separate dish before adding to pan or recipe,
use your eyes, nose, and common sense to decide if egg is OK to eat.

I just keep mine lined up in order of laying....or date full cartons to put in fridge.
Just about thru the 4 dozen I stashed back in Sept.

Correct 😊 In her case, she uses her eggs so fast that if they float for her then they’re getting old is what she said. That’s why she float tests hers.

I write the dates on mine, but I guess if a household uses them so fast that may not be what they do 🤷‍♀️

I’ve only ever float tested eggs that I found from a hidden nest and the ones that floated were rotten. But yes 👍 I’m aware it’s all about that air cell.

I float test for fun and it’s right before I eat mine and that’s because I eat 4 month old eggs. And they sure float 😂

I leave mine on the counter for a couple weeks and then they go into the fridge. I date my eggs. I don't wash them.
My cousin did an experiment with her eggs in the fridge... they were still good 6 months later, none were spoiled and all tasted good; this isn't an official scientific experiment, just a redneck experiment.

6 months?! Guess I’ll go try it out. I have an old stash of eggs from June all the way back in my fridge.

I’ve been eating eggs from August this month and they’re still good. I’m alive and well and no tummy aches 😂 same with my kids.

If I run out of August eggs before my hens start laying again maybe I’ll try out the June eggs.

How long are eggs good for? I have been just taking the eggs from the nesting boxes and keeping them in the garage (about 50 degrees f) without washing them. Would it be better to wash and refrigerate them? How long are they good either way?
I have 13 chickens. They are 8 months old. It is Dec.21 and I still get 8-11 eggs a day. I do not wash my eggs before refrigerating. I did find a method of storing eggs in pickling lime. Use fresh clean eggs. Not washed. just no poop. Get a glass or clear plastic container with a lid. Use 1 measured ounce of the lime powder to a quart of distilled water. Filling the container about half way with water. The lime will settle. I bought the pictured container on Amazon. Put the clean unwashed eggs in the solution everyday until your container is full and eggs stay covered with liquid. The shelf life is 8+ months. They say frying them isnt great but baking with them is good. I have not used mine yet so I cannot attest to the quality. Rinse them off well before using them. Store them in a cool pantry or a room that stays at an even temp of 50°.

If I’m storing eggs for longer than 6 months I just dehydrate them 😂
Let us know how good they are in 8 months though I’m curious.

In the refrigerator they’re good for at least 4 months. I’ll find out if 6 months is good too within the next few weeks probably, if I get the courage up to eat an egg from June 😂

I will definitely post how good they are. I read you can freeze eggs also if you scramble them. How do you dehydrate eggs and store them? shelf life?

I have a dehydrator. I add them uncooked. They turn flaky and I run them through a food processor to make them as close to powder as I can. I suction seal them in a glass jar. To use there’s a certain powder to water ratio (I gotta look it up) and I cook them as scrambled eggs.

They don’t taste amazing but they’re edible. When I did my test run I didn’t add veggies or butter or cheese to my eggs though so I’m sure with extra ingredients the flavor would be better.

I don’t know how long the shelf life is however. I’ve heard they’re good for years if they’re sealed properly. But I barely started early summer. I’ll have to test it out maybe when I go camping in my backyard next year in the fall.

Oh I cracked open an egg from June 27th and it had a slight egg smell but not a “it has gone bad” smell. I cooked it and it smelled like any other cooked egg. I gave it to my dog since I’m not hungry but maybe tomorrow I’ll eat one to test it out.
