Eggshell Seed Starters

My girls wouldn't like me using their tasty eggshells to start seeds. They love eating those shells too much!

My kids and I made "Eggheads" a long time ago. Crack the very end of the pointy end off the egg and dump the contents. Rinse and pack with vermiculite & dirt blend. Water well and then put grass seed in the opening. You can draw faces on the eggshell, and when the grass grows it looks like green hair. It's really cute (but hard to water as someone mentioned before).

I never could make this work for me... plants dried out too soon and it was tough watering them individually.
If someone solves these problems, could you post it?

when I do this I put the eggs in the bottom half of egg crate and put the crate in all in a plastic bag. the plastic bag acts like a mini green house. when the seedlings grow to big for the bag I take them out and place the crate and all in a disposable tinfoil roasting pan and water that way. The water that overflows from the egg goes into the roasting pan and the paper mulch of the egg carton adsorbs it keeping the roots moist.

I take the back side of a spoon and crack the egg shell before planting in the ground I do this to give the roots somewhere to go. I did not do this step the first year and i had smaller then average plants it takes to much energy for the roots to break through the shell (i am guessing)
