Eglu Cube

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying an Eglu Cube for my 3 light Sussex girls but as they are so expensive I wanted to check on here first!

Has anyone got or had one of the new models or looking at the spec can you see any problems? I will probably get a 3m run with it although they do free range during the day.

I do not personally have any experience with the Eglu Cube but I have seen it discussed on BYC on a few occasions and there are definitely lovers and haters

If you search Eglu Cube in the search option you will see a lot of posts about them and will hopefully come up with a good list of pros and cons to help you make a decision.

I also have no experience. It seems like the "ladder" to the coop would be a problem in cold weather. With the outside dimensions of 3' x 3', the coop is tiny to start with and taking the nesting box out of that, I hope your 3 girls are best buds. I love the idea, my problem is with the small size and exorbitant price.

In my opinion they are cute but totally inappropriate for housing chickens in. It might have it's uses as a temporary isolation coop, but long term I would think there would be some behavioral problems from the lack of space. For the money they cost you could build something bigger for less.

With those dimensions, I'd say one may be pushing it to keep just two standard sized birds in such a coop, not to mention having to rob a bank to pay for it

If you are interested, I have one that I will be selling in about a month. I have 2 of them plus a big wooden coop, and I like them all.

The one I will be selling is green and has the longest run on it. I have been housing a flock of Spitzhauben in it for the past 2 years (the coop is about 7 years old). I do move the coop to a new location on my lot every day or two, and I found it plenty adequate for them if I always kept them on fresh grass. Prior to that, I used it as a bachelor coop, and before that it was my main coop, but a deep snow where we used to live once buried it and that made getting the birds food and water was a pain in the butt.

I now live on Whidbey Island where we get little snow. My neighbors recently complained of my roosters, and though my property is designated farm, I border city lots on two sides. Since we just moved here, I did not want to start life up here in disagreements with neighbors, so I got rid of most of my chickens ....that means I still have about 20.

When the weather gets below freezing, I put a heated cat matt under the shavings in the nest box. The chickens would huddle together on it at night. In the run, I hung a heat lamp and kept the ground covered in the thick layer of shavings, and a clear tarp over the top of the run. I kept 6 birds in there, but they are kind of smallish, 5 roosters another time (3 were bantam, and 2 big guys). I had 4 larger birds in there when I first bought it.

The Eglu's are very easy to take apart and clean up. I bought it because bears can't break in though they can damage the run.I wrapped the run in 1/2 inch hardware cloth to keep raccoon hands out.

I have 4 full sized hens in my Cube and they have lots of room (I was shocked how much bigger the coop is in real life)
