Eglu Cube

peas&bees :

I have moved on from the idea of an Eglu Cube because of the recommendations here. We are now spending our time looking through various coop plans as well as some larger ready mades.

I am wondering if the Eglu Cube is ever an appropriate choice?

I love my Eglu Cube. We live in a place with a mild winter and the hens have a larger run than the one that came with the coop. As far as coops go, it is very well built, extremely easy to clean, decently cool in our hot summers, well-ventilated, and offers plenty of room for five full-sized hens. Here's mine. I think it's a great choice for the right situation, but it has some limitations (I wouldn't keep chickens in there without a decent-sized run year-round). Eglus get criticized on this forum a lot, but I suspect most people think they are smaller than they actually are, and most people don't realize how incredibly easy they are to use and clean.

Whatever you decide, best of luck with your chickens!

Just a reply to anyone who owns a cube. I have had my chickens for 7 mos now. Waited forever have the coop arrive. First it got held up in customs then the delivery truck got hit by a train. I am not kidding! Had to move the babes from their stock tank in the computer room to the dog run out in back every day twice a day. Finally it came. I dont know about this being the best coop for someone who lives in Canada. I live in Roanoke Virginia. It is snowing right now. The ease of cleaning this coop is truly amazing. It disassembles in seconds. Just disinfect and rinse with the hose. The slide out drop trays are great for keeping cleanup easy. The run is well constructed with skirts to deter burrowing creatures. No need to treat wood. Incidence of mites greatly reduced with plastic. This is our first winter so will have to see if condensation is a problem. Have had a lot of rain but no coop leakage. It does move easily around your yard but best to do with two people if you have the run extensions. Ten chickens would be too much for this coop. I have six golden comets which are pretty small chickens but not bantams. They all use the same nest box and they average 5 eggs a day. I think this can be a great coop option for someone who is not exactly that DIY kind of person. Ease of maintenance is really nice and you can make any modifications to their environments that are necessary by staying tuned to backyardchickens.com

hi there
i have owned an eglu for 5 or 6 years. and i LOVE it. i have used it for chickens initially and now for ducks, or ducklings or a lame bird.....a brilliant addition to my farm. it keeps the birds safe. i would highly recommend it.
right now i have my eglu out to a family along with three ducks who are on slug patrol. easy to clean, easy to transport and easy for others to use.
