would the eglu chicken coop be good to keep one hen in? could she nest and have room and be protected from weather and foxes also, if the eglu isnt good can you tell me what is? :)

Why would you want only one hen?
She will be very lonely as a flock bird.

They are very expensive (eglu) for what they are - you might be able to build better- I don't remember how the doors work on them either, but if they can be opened simply the coons and foxes can get in.

i dont know how the doors work either and maybe we will get two so she isnt loney i guess

Eglus are not affordable as I recall they were $300+ dollars but without the run.

Looking at them on Omlet site they look like they could be opened b a coon or fox.

Also for 2 hens you need 4 square feet per hen or 8 square feet... according to popular opinion here.

Really it's a plastic small dog crate...

Doesn't My Pet Chicken and similar sites have prefab coops? There's a lot of different designs, sizes and shapes. None of them are cheap but if that isn't an issue and you want something you can just order and set up quick you might look into it. Or check Craigslist etc.

I'd build it myself or with help I'd go to the lumber store (discount lumber store) and by pieces 8 feet and 2 inches long (approx) of 2*3 boards (they are cheeper then 2*2 9r 2*4s.

and I'd get 2 inch wood screws and make a almost cube - you need 12 lengths of wood @ 8 feet each or the tools to use on 16 foot lengths. (you may want to make it only 4 feet tall or 6 feet tall...

I'd put the cube onto those risers made for decks (you need four) and then cover the sides and top with plywood.

risers- http://www.homedepot.com/Storage-Or...=10053&langId=-1&keyword=riaser&storeId=10051 - these are plastic but can be used as forms to make concrete ones.

then I'd get some cheep plywood and let it dry and paint it really well with a washable paint, both sides... then cover the top and 90% up the sides with that... then use hardware cloth for the vents.

---

OR you can buy a cheep plastic shed, anchor it get a real lock for the door and make vents- still about the same price and more room for the hens and you to clean up in there.

I have the eglu classic. I and my 3 girls love it. The doors as well as the run are preditor proof. I do hope to build a larger more permanent coop at some time but the eglu works great until then.

The eglu is much sturdier than any of the pre-made wodden coops I've seen for sale and the price is comparable. What I really like is the way it comes apart for deep cleaning. Just take it apart, wash it down, let dry in the sun, and put it back together. No issue of getting any bugs such as mites or fleas.

I found mine on craigslist, maybe you can find one, too.
