Egyptian Fayoumis Thread!

I am in the same boat as some others on here, picked out a cute little redheaded chick out of the "mixed rare breed" bin at the feed store that turned out to be an Egyptian Fayoumi Rooster. He has the most personality of all of my birds, is very active and talks ALL the time. I have to say he is my favorite of all my birds. Just tonight he mounted one of my Buff Orps...is this normal for the roos of this breed at 13 weeks of age? Is he able to inseminate or is he just practicing?

The breed is very precocious, but at that age he is probably just practicing - but won't be long until he's accomplishing his goal. The hens are said to begin laying at 4-4.5 months of age. I have two pair just shy of 4 months, they need to become a trio, one of the males is clearly dominant over the other and the submissive male can't be having any fun at this point, though he certainly tries.

Mr. Roo (not an original name but he seems to respond to it), rules the roost when it comes to all of the chickens except Jeanne one of the Buff Orps.....no one messes with Jeanne! Mr. Roo and the male guinea are beginning to have issues (and the guinea will be looking for a new home either in the freezer or at someone elses house, because I prefer my roo) and he also steers clear of the ducks. He recently started stomping his feet at the hens and they snap to attention when he does this! I am wondering what a Buff and Fayoumi cross would look like....might have to try my hand at hatching a few and see. I am considering ordering some more Fayoumi's and raising them exclusively, but since I have so few I am not sure if I will be happy with the small eggs they lay. If I could I would have a separate pen for them. When he was a chick he was a bully and I had to put him in with the older birds and he has remained close to those birds every since.

Mr. Roo is constantly cackling, crowing or making some other sound (including a sound very similar to what Curly from the Three Stooges would make when he was frustrated). So yes, I would say they are talkative. If you have neighbors that won't care for the noise they might not be the right breed for you.

I am still waiting for mine to lay...any day now!!!

They are a wonderful breed. The roosters are not aggressive at all so far to us.

They love to get up in the tree and perch to observe the world!

What a smart breed and so talkative. I am very happy with them.

My roo is only aggressive toward the hens....he keeps those ladies in line! He will stare at me and cackle at me and my ten yr old daughter, but has never charged or anything. He has charged my dogs (a lab/boxer mix and a beagle) but as soon as he realizes they aren't backing down he turns around quickly.
Has anyone ever heard of a Fayoumis cross? Now that my roo is beginning to mount some hens, I am wondering what might come from them.
Chris
