Happy to have found this thread! I got some EF chicks from Cackle Hatchery this spring, I still have 10 (have shared the rest with others) and they are 6 weeks old. The males are happy to scrap around with one another and the females seem quite calm. The first thing I noticed about them is when I set them in the brooder from the shipping box they barely hit the ground and they were RUNNING across the brooder, so active! No crows yet but should be anytime now. How old were yours when the pullets began laying?
Omigoodness. They're the cutest chicks EVER. I think they look like little Australian shepherds. We have some for the first time and they're only seven weeks old, but they mature quickly. Little Frodo was trying to crow at three weeks
, a sweet little trill. Unfortunately, I can't keep roosters, so I'm already trying to find a home for my cute crowing roo. I love their upright tails, the slate blue feet, the weir markings around the eyes. Tiny, independent, fast.
I happened on this breed by accident. Purchased my chick from the "Assorted Bantam" bin at TSC this time around and was definitely surprised at what it turned out to be as I'd never even heard of this breed! Have done a little research on the breed and read the roos can start crowing at 4 weeks. My "guy" is almost 8 weeks and haven't heard a peep. Wondering if anyone has any input on whether I'm looking at a pullet or a roo? Thanks for the help!
