Egyptian Fayoumis Thread!

I have Egyptian Fayoumi chicks right now and what is so interesting is that with shipped chicks (I bought my Fayoumis from McMurray) I always have had to clean off pasty butt many times. But I have not had to clean off a single rear end of my chicks! Sometimes there is a little poo spot that hangs off the end of their bottoms but it always drops off by itself.

I did have to clean off the rear end of the chicks that were shipped with my Fayoumis. Several times! I can tell that this breed just has some sort of innate health that the other breeds don't have.

They have already won me over! What an amazing breed and how blessed we are that the (then) Dean of Agriculture of Iowa State U. brought them over in the 1940s!

Just thought I'd update and mention that one of my Fayoumi roos just started crowing today, at 8 weeks old! He is the first to crow in the group. I have some that are 5 weeks old, as well. They aren't crowing yet, but may start any day now.

They are all doing fine and are quite docile. Even my silkies are above them in the pecking order. They are friendly to me, but very skittish if I get up to come over to them. They are cheerful and talkative. I love them. When I hold them they implore me to let go with their little voices. It is the very tone of voice I'd use to bargain with someone to let me go if I were a chicken.

They come right up to me when I am sitting or standing there and peck my boots, or drink/eat.

Happy to have found this thread! I got some EF chicks from Cackle Hatchery this spring, I still have 10 (have shared the rest with others) and they are 6 weeks old. The males are happy to scrap around with one another and the females seem quite calm. The first thing I noticed about them is when I set them in the brooder from the shipping box they barely hit the ground and they were RUNNING across the brooder, so active! No crows yet but should be anytime now. How old were yours when the pullets began laying?

My pullets aren't laying yet- but soon I hope! I probably have a couple months to go I am estimating.

They are very active - I enjoy watching them do their "road runner" run across the chicken yard.

Omigoodness. They're the cutest chicks EVER. I think they look like little Australian shepherds. :) We have some for the first time and they're only seven weeks old, but they mature quickly. Little Frodo was trying to crow at three weeks

, a sweet little trill. Unfortunately, I can't keep roosters, so I'm already trying to find a home for my cute crowing roo. I love their upright tails, the slate blue feet, the weir markings around the eyes. Tiny, independent, fast.

I had to go search for Australian Shep. to see what you meant- LOL.

I happened on this breed by accident. Purchased my chick from the "Assorted Bantam" bin at TSC this time around and was definitely surprised at what it turned out to be as I'd never even heard of this breed! Have done a little research on the breed and read the roos can start crowing at 4 weeks. My "guy" is almost 8 weeks and haven't heard a peep. Wondering if anyone has any input on whether I'm looking at a pullet or a roo? Thanks for the help!

I vote cockerel but don't give him away based on what I say if you can't have roos because this is the first time I'm raising mine, and mine are also young. I do have some crowing now...what I think of as pullets have very little comb.

He is a cutie-pie!
