Good thing they have soft mouths, just barely broke the skin.

So there I was minding my own business, feeding-watering-collecting eggs after work. It's raining and gloomy and dark in the Rhode Island red house. Reach in the first 2 nest boxes and got a couple eggs when I reached into the next one down on the bottom it felt warm in there. I figured a hen was in there.......not. A big ole male 'possum had moved in and bit my hand. Just barely broke the skin on my thumb.

Then he made a major mistake, was still there when I came back from the house. 'possum pie anybody? Loving wife already made sure the insurance policy is good to go.

Glad to hear your ok but keep an eye on that bite. Opossums can carry disease. I agree with rebbetzin. I think I might see if that's possible too.

Opossum rarely carry rabies but who knows what other nasty microbes might have taken up residence in its mouth. Still a good idea to get checked and since the OP mentioned insurance it might already be being taken care of.

Ahh, have fun with the rabies, if you are getting the series. The HRIG, what needs to be given immediately after exposure needs to be both administered into a large muscle group AND at the site of exposure, and it is an incredibly thick solution too. I was bitten by a bat (long story) over the summer on my hand. Lets just say, I am happy I'll never have to get that done again! The actual vaccine that is also given post exposure can be given like any other, normal vaccine, in the deltoid of the arm. But if you get that critter tested, you'll probably not need the entire post vaccine series.
