Electric Bill??

I wasn't sure where to post this question so I thought I'd put it here. I'm trying to decide how much more insulation to add to my house this summer. My electricity bills seems very high. I've got a heat pump and an ac unit. My bill ranges from a low of $70 in the summer. To a high of $120 in the winter. My house is an Northwest cottage style built in 1943 and is around 900sf. I was wondering if some of you guys wouldn't mind chiming in with what your electric bills are. I'm looking to compare against others and get an idea of wether mine is really high or not too bad.

Well that sounds like a deal to me! My electric in the winter is around $70 or so in the winter and gets to be in the high $200's in the summer. I am in Georgia maybe the climate has a lot to do with it.

Have you updated your windows? Lot of heat goes out the windows in the winter and heat sneaks in to make your AC run harder and longer.

There not original but they are crappy single pane windows from the 70's. I'd like to fix those first but it will be very spendy!

I've had $40 summer bills and $100 winter bills. Then I had relatives move in and never leave... hence us moving to a new location. My winter bill this past year... $750. The bill has now dropped to $290, but I still think that is ridic....

I can't wait to get those solar panels, just for the 4 of us...

My electric bill runs anywhere from 200 in the summer to $400's in the winter. At the moment everything in my house is electric, furnace, hot water, stove ect. I am trying to talk DH into putting in a pellet stove but so far no go.

Try the plastic window cover. I dont remember what its called. You put a double sided sticky tape around the window and then place a sheet of plastic over it. You can find it at Fred Meyers, Home Depot or Lowes. That should help. I have a 1950, 900 sq ft. rental in Portland that we lived in for years and our bill was high because I have those windows in there. Putting that plastic on the windows will help.

Anybody here from western NY? Niagara Falls is the home of one of the largest electrical generating stations in the world. We moved to Va two years ago. The reason? Heating bills of 450.00 a MONTH were not uncommon and that with a brand new gas furnace!!! Count your blessings.

I have 1677 sq ft. I'm on a monthly average billing of $164.65.
My last month ACTUAL usage was $143. (average temp. was about 90 deg. with thermostat at 73)


In the winter it can run as much as $230/mo and summer as high as $270/mo. This WAS before I had a new heat pump installed last Sept.

I lived in Washington State for approx 25 years. I have NEVER seen electric bills as high. I had a friend in 1984/5 paying $650/mo to heat an old farm house. We were paying for WPPS (or WOOPS!! as it was nick named.) A nuclear reactor project that was moth balled after billions were spent on construction.
