electric skillet as incubator- experiment- coturnix quail

I'm so intrigued by your experiment! My one question, though, is this - I thought Teflon was somewhat toxic once it starts to peel off the pan? I've read articles that said you should throw it out once it starts to peel because it's not safe to cook on anymore. Not that you're cooking with it... (yet!)

They just don't want people ingesting the fragments directly, I'm satisfied you can use teflon in your incubator without concern.

Years ago we used to have cockatiels and I remembered that they couldnt be in the kitchenbut not why. This jogged my memory, teflon emits a toxic gas when heated (toxic tocockatiels anyway), found this on googling It, but not sure the effects on being inside egg and hatching??

From your link;
"Birds are susceptible to a respiratory condition called "teflon toxicity" or "PTFE poisoning/toxicosis." Deaths can result from this condition, which is due to the noxious fumes emitted from overheated cookware coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)"

I would expect most cookware to be designed with temperatures in the 200-500 degree range before they are considered overheated.
Also I'm sure that an item that has been through many many heat cycles is not emitting near the gas levels of a new "fresh" utensil.

I think she'll be ok.

The pan is use and was given to me. Its got about 60% or better of the coating worn off. One of the reasons i dont want it for cooking. I am a cast iron girl myself.

Good to know about that. Thanks. And i think with this definitely use old worn skillet and since the temp is at 100* i dont think it should be putting off much for it to heat anyhow.

Startin over. Tonight the eggs go in. Triple checkin my skillet temps and then they will be in.
Also i am pretty excited because this evening i got 3 eggs instead of theusual 2 and from the pattern and color i can tell its a third hen. Yippeeeee! Now one more hen to go.

OGG, did you ever consider putting the whole thing inside a cooler with a grill situated above for the eggs to lay on.

and a brainy person could modify the little fans in one of those glade plug ins (well maybe 2, they're tiny)

to stir the air....Just sayin.

I dont have a cooler or grate /: i thought about trying a box but dont want to stop air flow. Eggs are in and things are good so far- *knock on wood!*
