Today was very hot and we put electrolytes in the chickens water and the packet said it was for a gallon of water but we only have six small chickens so a gallon is way too much for them so instead we put a small amount from the packet. I was wondering if anyone else does this?

Well I can understand your predicament. I only had nine baby chicks when I had to start using the electrolytes in our chicks wafter on a regular basis because I live where it’s very hot and humid in Mississippi. What I would end up doing is mixing up an entire gallon and making use of it for the full 24 hours and then starting with fresh. I know that you hate to waste it but I found as my chicks grew older that they soon used it all up and weren’t wasting as much as I thought they would be. There are more wasteful situations that we cause like spillage, or evaporations caused by issuing cooling fans, and, sometimes mine would bump the waterer container flying into it when they were practixing spreading their wings and getting in their flight plans and training for the month earning their wings. Geez. So it is always something that can waste a little bit of money or a few pennies more in something to say you a few dollars or cents on something. So I would just makeup the entire gallon and be done with it for less hassle. You will be worrying about nothing I believe.

I measured out a packet several years ago and did the math.
Always have plain water too.

I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves.
It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.
Can mix up a smaller amount, just wrap the packet tight and store in a dry cool place.
Always have plain water available too.

BIG(9x14x2") chunks of ice last all day for wading, sitting, and sipping.
Much more useful to the chickens than frozen foods and treats.
