Ellie's Flock!

Didn’t know if this was a good place to ask this. So I bought the Mareks vaccination but as I’m sure you know it only lasts for an hour or two once you mix it. So I’m vaccinating chicks that are between 1-3 weeks. Is there harm in vaccinating at 3 weeks? Can Mareks be in the air and end up killing the chicks I vaccinate? I already think I established that unvaccinated chicks wouldn’t be affected by other chicks having been vaccinated. I’ve gotten chicks from different people and I’ve also hatched a bunch so I don’t know who is vaccinated and who isn’t...

I have never vaccinated my own chicks, personally. I buy them as day-old chicks that are pre-vaccinated. According to random BYC article, it says it's fine to vaccinate them when they are older. No idea if it's bad to re-vaccinate either. For people, it's fine... but they're chickens, not humans. :lau

I'd create a thread and ask this question if I were you. Or you could tag some pros here- I don't mind at all. :) I'm very curious. @rjohns39 @HuffleClaw, do you know anything else on this?

Another update... so I had a group of chicks that I thought were vaccinated since I paid for the vaccination, but they look like this... I’m thinking Mareks... now I’m panicking a little

I find Maerek's generally appears when they are older pullets, not chicks. Maybe it could still affect chicks? I have no idea. Then again, her eye looks slightly droopy. Hmm.

I still have to recommend creating a thread- I'm not a professional and it'd been a few years (3-5 I forgot) since my last Maerek's mini-outbreak.

I'll be back in the morning!

Flock Update:

As I said in the last update, Sadie is still under the weather. I'm thinking it's something to do with the end of her head molt, which sort of makes sense. Nevertheless, I'm still giving her little private feedings of some probiotics and other... things (vinegar, olive oil, you know.) But, Sadie and Gracie were preening together and when I gave her the probiotics, she stared down all of the nuggets who wanted to get a piece. So, not that worried anymore.

Besides that, the snow had melted a lot, but now it's snowing again right now- the big flakes. Yippee.
I don't think I have anything else to mention. I got a happy and healthy flock. :thumbsup
