Embarking on ambitious eggsperiment

Well, nothing to report yet, or at least not from what I can tell. Saying that, it's still early in the day, and also, some say day 21 is only tomorrow:lol:

Most important of all......................I've not given up hope just yet:D

Fingers crossed for you!!!

Well, went out and checked this morning and I found one broken egg in the nesting box. Only some left over shell so I can't really tell much from that. If it was broken by another hen in the nest, and there was a developing chick inside, would the hens have eaten it, or should I assume the egg was a dud? So, now down to three eggs, and it's day 22, so generally, things are not looking too good

On a slightly brighter note, my biggest hen has once again started to lay eggs for me. Once I put them all out to free range, the youngsters she stole from another hen soon discovered their independence, so she was soon without company, hence the new eggs now

Also, one of my young roosters has just crowed for the first time, so hopefully it won't be too long before he begins doing his job. With that said, I'm thinking about getting one of the really big fighting cocks (very common over here) and then using him to service my girls in order to breed in some bigger sizes.

Damn, no matter what I try and tell myself, I still want some Light Sussex, so yes, even if none of the three remaining eggs hatch, I'll simply have to get more

, well if (or when) you do get more hatching eggs your gunna have to tell us how it goes. Good luck on breeding bigger chickens

. oh, and what breed are the fighting cocks there?

I figure the odds are good that if you buy enough eggs, one of them has to be sturdy enough to hatch successfully. I've been reading the forums, and if people are really hatching eggs in their bras and undies, you've got to get lucky sometime. I might of missed this, but have you thought about using an incubator? I'm *so* happy to be able to candle at least some of my eggs right now lol

I don't want to get your hope up, but my 1st broody hen had a hatch and all I saw for the whole day were broken pieces of shell. the next day I could hear chirping under her, but still couldn't see any chicks. Maybe there's one in there! The hen may sit for a day and a half before getting up after the first one hatches.

What breed are the fighting cocks?.........To be honest, I have no idea but they are well and truly huge birds. Something else I've noticed is that they all seem to be really nice around people. It's almost unheard of for one to chase a child or anything like that. Of course I would be getting one simply to breed in some size, so if I look around long enough, I can more than likely pick one up for free or for a few dollars at the most. The ones bred for fighting and/or for shows can on the other hand sell for a few hundred dollars. Strictly speaking, cock fighting is illegal over here but it's still common, and not much is done by the authorities. In fact, gambling is illegal in Thailand, and if the police did interfere in a cock fight, their only concern would be the gambling. Nothing would happen regarding the actual cock fight. There are farms here that breed only champion line fighting cocks, and they're the ones which are expensive. A common fighting cock (not from a breeder and one without any reputation for being a good fighter) can usually be had for about 200 or 300 Thai baht (about $10 at the most)

Have I tried an incubator? Never have as I'm still quite new to all this. Also, these Thai hens spend half their lives being broody so if you have five or six hens, you'll usually have at least one broody at any given time

I wasn't really expecting great results considering the eggs were shipped from the UK to Thailand, but like you say, if I buy enough of them, I'm bound to get lucky at some point. It's more about having some fun than anything else, and believe me, it's been a whole lot of fun so far.....
