I am very sorry for your loss. Sometimes, they are taken before we get a chance to really help them.
To answer your question, the towels are to let her drain. If she is filling with fluid, and you poke a hole in her, she can continue to drain depending on how much there is, and can soak through several towels.
You would poke right in the fattest part of the swelling, kind of at an angle along the skin... Not straight in, but a little parallel to her.
If it is clear, it's fluid build up maybe from fatty liver disease, renal failure, or heart failure. If it's yellow, it could be internal laying. If it's cloudy or bloody, it could be cancer or a tumor.
