Hello I have been giving my goose an antibiotic capsule down her throat twice a day for over a week now. Everything seemed to be going well until yesterday when she stopped eating. This morning she still hadn’t ate but it was time to give her tablet so I put it down her throat with no complications. Around 20 minutes after giving her the tablet she started shaking her head as if choking. Then some yellow bile came up. The shaking of the head has since decreased however she ate some grass a minute ago and started shaking her head again as if the grass wouldn’t go down. I now have her in her pool and can see that one side of her neck seems to be bigger than the other as if the tablet and grass have gathered there. It is not a clear lump but looks more like it is swelled on that side. She keeps swallowing as if trying to get it down but nothing is happening. It has now been almost two hours since giving pill and she is still acting funny.

Best thing would be a vet if she has something lodged in her throat I don't see how your going to get it out with out vet help. What color is the antibiotic ingredients?

Will she drink water maybe add some olive or coconut oil to the water having something oily might help get the clog down.

Thanks for the replies Lucy is doing much better now. She stopped shaking her head and hasn’t thrown up anymore bile as far as I know. She ate her feed and has been drinking fine. She is however still doing this strange thing with her head and neck when I give her food as if it is hard to swallow even small amounts. After eating she stretches out her neck and then quickly pulls her head back towards her crop. She also shakes her head while doing it. She did this same thing when she was younger and the vet said that it was because she was gorging her food down to the point of almost choking. She grew out of it though and hasn't done it for almost a year, until yesterday when she started again. This time she isn't gorging though, it happens even on a small amount of food. She is getting the food down though so there mustn't be a blockage or at least a big one. I did take a video of her doing it but can’t seem to attach it. Does anyone know how to attach it? I also noticed some bumps on her cheeks yesterday. They are only small (around the size of a pea) and appear on both sides of her mouth. Could this be related to giving her the antibiotic? I have since stopped giving it to her however she is only half way through her 30 day course of antibiotics given to me by the vet. The antibiotics are clindamycin hydrochloride 150mg and she takes two a day. Could they be drying out her throat and that's whats causing the difficulty swallowing? Any suggestions to whats going on with Lucy?

Our vet warned us that when giving meds to our goose that we should lubricate the pill first (with water or a water soluble lubricant) and make sure it is followed with water or food. If the pills melt while in the esophagus, they can cause irritation or chemical burns in the esophagus. If she is still acting like this, you might want to take your goose to a vet. You could try giving any antacid preparation suggested by your vet only. When our American Buff gander swallowed a length of baling twine with a nail in it, they removed it at the state university vet hospital under anesthesia and we were instructed to give him a sucralfate pill to coat his esophagus and stomach every 12 hours for 3 days. Best wishes and good luck!

I have nexium on hand, is that safe to give to geese. Or what would be the over the counter equivalent to sucralfate. I will definitely talk to the vet that prescribed the antibiotics however they are not open till tomorrow so will have to treat her myself.
