Hi everyone,

It is 1 in the morning and hubby just woke me up because he could hear one of the chicks in the kitchen. I checked it out and it has a large prolapse that is bleeding so I am guessing the others have been pecking it. It is a 3 day old bantam

they all had clean butts before I went to bed, are eating and drinking ok and all seemed to be healthy. What can cause this?

do I have to quickly cull this chick? There is quite a bit of bleeding but it does seem to be slowing down now it is separated. Can I gently put this prolapse back in and see how it goes? If I do need to cull - how do I do this?

thank you for any help!

Could u put some picture son? It would help alot :)
I tried to get a photo but it can’t focus. It looks like a cylinder shape of red tissue hanging out where the vent should be - it’s about 1cm long. It is bleeding when it poops but seems to be slowing down from the corn starch. Any hopes for this one? Can this heal? Edited as I just managed to get it back in - but there was a big bit of tissue that wasn’t attached anymore - it doesn’t look good for this chick but it seems happy at the moment so I will see how it is in the morning.

You need to separate him out first. Don't let the tissue dry out, it needs to stay moist. Use some medicated Vaseline as a sort of lubricant, and gently try pushing the tissue back inside. You don't want to hurt it! It'll either go back in or not. Can you take it to a vet?

Sounds like a prolapsed and my hen had had it so i put her in a warm bath of water and an egg came out my its different with a chick...

Thank you for your replies everyone. I had separated the chick, kept it lubricated and put the prolapse back in when it came out - but it passed away thismorning. I am questioning if the bleeding was from pecking or if something else was going on as when it tried to poop a lot of blood came out - even when the prolapse was outside and when it passed its abdomen was quite swollen. Poor little thing. I couldn’t get it to a vet in time - they still aren’t open for half an hour :(
