Help! I had a broody hen sitting on a clutch. I went to check her today and found one baby dead on the ground and wet. I thought it was a fresh hatch an something was wrong with it so she kicked it out. I went back later to check again because she hadn't brought the babies off the nest yet. She got up and all of her babies were covered of nasty goo. A bad egg broke under her.
I brought the babies inside, cleaned them and put tem under the brooder. They are fine. I can't get the hen to come away from the broodie coop I had her in. Another hen is in there with her own babies and the gross hen is trying to round up the babies. She is obviously still interested in her babies but she is so gross I can't put the chicks back under her. What do I do?

I washed her and tried to dry her a little. When I took her back out she acted uninterested in the chicks and tried to leave the coop. So I stuffed the babies up under my other hen. She accepted them, but I'm going to check them in a little while to make sure they are still okay.

Yes. I have a very small coop that I have in the past used as a broodie breaker. I put her back in there with the babies. When I gave all the babies to the other hen that was in there, the one I had to wash made the saddest noise I have ever ears from a chicken. It sounded like she was crying. I went back out later in the evening and he had at least a couple of babies under ER so I think everything is going to be fine. My whole house smelled like rotten eggs fr a while after I gave everybody a bath. That was the worst!

Oops, should have said to wash her outside.

Oops, should have said to wash her outside.

I was afraid it was too cold. It ha rained off and on all day. I put warm water in a plastic bucket and did the majority outside but then too her inside to finish and gently blow dry some of the moisture off. She seeme to do fine and the babies were still alive and warm under her this morning.
