Please advise (no chicken vet in area) I went to put my flock in for the night and noticed one chicken was slowly walking farther away from coop. The other 8 flock members had already settled in for the night.
I can see that she has a split (about 1 inch hole under the roundest part of her butt. Sorry I don’t know chicken anatomy well.) it’s not her vent but further down. Hanging from the hole is a long red/pink tissue- possible intestine looking part. It’s hanging out a few inches from her body. She lay down under a tree and started to fall asleep as the sun went down. I didn’t want her to get eaten or attacked over night so I’ve isolated her in a crate. I picked her up wrapped in a towel and she tolerated this.
I thought this was vent prolapse and was prepared to tuck this hanging part back into the hole. But after googling images of vent prolapse I see it’s not coming from her vent. And it’s a very long piece of internal tissue and I’m not sure if this will cause more harm. Any advice helpful. I will post better photos once it’s light out.
Update: I went to check on her while she was sleeping. She stood up and there was some blood underneath her. But the hanging down part seems to have retracted somewhat (It wasn’t hanging as far down)

Oh my. We had a hen with a similar, but WAY worse injury years ago before I joined BYC. Her whole back end had been split open leaving her intestines exposed. She survived for 3 days, but we put her down after that. Point being, as inexperienced as we were at the time there might be hope for your sweet lady.
Crossing my fingers for you both! I don't have much input for such a serious injury.
:hugs

That looks like a loop of her intestines. You really can't do anything here without a veterinarian. Even if you don't have a chicken specific vet, I would get her to an exotics or even regular emergency vet. They often have specialists on hand at ER vets.

Without surgery the intestines will die off and she will go septic. I'm so sorry. I hope you can get her the help she needs. I'll tag some others here in case they have advice.

I'm sorry this happened to her, it looks serious and only thing I can advise is getting her to a vet. I agree with @RoaemaryDuck

If taking her to a vet is really not an option, I would consider euthanizing her.

That's the saddest thing. The description of her going away from the coop when the others were heading to the coop to roost tells us this chicken is already dying. It also appears that this hen was attacked and injuries are probably much worse than it appears.

I'm very big on fixing a chicken, and many wounds that are seemingly hideous often can heal just fine. But this little lady needs to be euthanized. As @RosemaryDuck mentioned, bacteria has probably already colonized this wound and the damage appears too great to treat it adequately.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I do agree it must be intestine. I don’t think she was attacked. She is a very large chicken (idk what type but seems like maybe extra large breed to be a meat chicken) I did see a thread about baby chicks who had their intestines popping out. And the owner pushed back in and super glued the chick. They ended up being ok. Is this crazy or a possibility to try?

Absolutely a crazy idea to put super glue on a chick. Actually nutty.

Can you get CLEAR CLOSE UP pictures of her butt?

The difference between treating a new chick for a rupture and this hen is bacterial load, a "clean" wound, and length of time the intestine is outside the body, and how much damage the intestine has. I am not familiar with this chick with the protruding intestine you speak of, but it's a safe bet the chick probably wasn't free ranging amongst an adult flock that may have injured the wound, further contaminating it and worsening it.

You can't just stick her intestine back inside and glue the wound shut. She would be dead from infection within 24 hours.

Here's what it would take to fix this hen, and a vet clinic would need to do it. Fully irrigating and cleansing the abdominal cavity of bacteria, isolating and repairing any tears in the intestine. Closing the wound enough to keep the intestines inside but not so completely that bacterial laden fluids can't drain. IV antibiotics and nutrients to stabilize the hen and coax her body to fight the infection. Most vets would advise euthanasia, but some might be happy to charge you hundreds of dollars to try to treat her and ultimately euthanizing her.
