*Emergency* My Hen Has A Prolapsed Vent!!

That's unexpected. What organ did they say was damaged and in what way?

Oh no! It did not look that bad to me in the photo! I had a hen with this very thing last night, and I just pulled out the egg-membrane and pushed her prolapse back in, and she is fine today.

Did he say that because the prolapse dried out while it was outside of her body? It really doesn't look ruined and dried out in the photo at all!

The organ was torn and damaged..

She had to be put to sleep

, the great chicken vet a few hours from me said she wouldn't survive a surgery because she was weak. I miss her so much.

She was the best hen in the whole world, and I feel great sadness knowing she is gone

This is her when she was healthy, her name was Herki.

oh no!! So sorry!! She was such a beauty! That makes me really sad. I didn't realize the prolapse wasn't going back in; the many times I've found a hen like that here, I just pushed it back in.

Poor dear Herki; she was blessed to have you take such great care of her until the end.

I did some research, and I don't think the organ was damaged. Now I hate my vet.. The last time I had to put a chicken to sleep because he said that my chicken had no hope, I discovered that my rooster could have made it if I kept him on antibiotics longer.. Ugh!

Well, this is no consolation, but I asked my friend who runs a sanctuary about prolapses and she said they usually end poorly. I guess when I've found them in my hens they have not been severe as yours was.

Just had this happen. I could see the soft shell egg (broken) sticking out a bit, and pulled it out. Cleansed her, pushed everything back in gently and held it there for a good 10 mins and then set her in a luke warm 'sits' bath for about 20 minutes. While there I fed her some sogged up bread (used milk) that was covered in powdered oyster shell. Toweled her off and she is back out with the hens in the yard acting more normal than she had been all day.

Thank goodness I had read about this a couple weeks ago. Or I wouldn't have known what to do. That and... I have no idea where my preparation H disappeared to! I know I had a tube just for if this happened, but my kit is missing it!
