my chickens attacked our little blind polish hen.... they plucked her feathers out and were attacking the meat! poor little thing already has a hard time because she cant see.... we left them alone for like 15 minutes while we went to get the rabbit fencing....they've never done this before, im thinking she must have had a sore or something and then went crazy!!! i cleaned it with saline.... what else can we do for her... besides isolating her ??? she is such a sweetheart and this is our first time with chickens... but she looks awful!!!! please help!!! her names kate by the way. ;) thanks jl

Hey there, I am so sorry that you and Kate are going through this. Chickens can be ruthless to one another. I am going to give you a link to an article on wound care for poultry. Obviously you know that she absolutely must be separated, but this article will help you to care for the damaged area. Chicken are fast healers, she will be okay.

You may find though that she cannot be kept with the rest of your flock, period.

Here is the link, good luck! http://shilala.homestead.com/woundcare.html

For a old time remedy, Kerosene will sooth her skin and keep her from infection. Try it on a open cut of your own and you will see how well this works. It removes soreness quicker than anything i have ever used. As for the rest of your flock, start feeding some dry dog food, about 1\5 of their grain ration. Also go to the store and buy some strips of fatback and nail a strip to a board inside the pen where the fowl can peck at it. Also refer to another article I wrote About healthy brood fowl. If you need anything else please let me know. I have been raising game fowl for 40 years and they have worked for me. REBEL SOLDIER

Thank you soooo much! This is just what I needed! I just put the blue kote wound care on he and she's getting her new little bachelorette pad fixed up! I appreciate it so much!

Well I just found out its probably her feathers hanging in her eyes lol!! Gonna give her a trim tomorrow!!

I'm sorry for your poor hen's injury. I was thinking after initial treatment, you could fit her with a hen saddle. They are usually used to protect hens from overly lovey roosters. But in your hens' case, it would cover her wound, and keep the other chickens from pecking her. I hope she heals up well for you. Is there a gentle grandma hen you could put in with her in the new bachlorette pen to keep her company?
