My poor Khaki Campbell drake has recently had a penis prolapse that I just noticed today (I think it just occurred). This is also terrible timing because I have him entered in a show in two days. I've read that cutting it off is the best solution, as they can regrow; is that true? I don't want to risk any damage.

I've cured prolapsed oviduct in two of my hens, but it took weeks to months. I don't have time for that. If I can't cure him fast enough, I could probably enter my two females as a laying pen, hopefully, if there is time, but it would be such a pity because he's a gorgeous-looking drake.

Also, out of curiosity, what are the causes of it? I read that over-usage is one (which is quite possible, frankly), any other common causes. They are very clean, get to swim everyday, and have a huge area (even though I only have four of them).

No, cutting it off is *not* the best solution, it is a last resort IF the tissue has gone necrotic... and no, they do not grow back... once it is gone, it is gone... cutting it off may save a life, if it comes to that, but don't expect fertility to be guaranteed in spring... if the whole part is removed, they are essentially sterilized... even partially can hinder them as ducks have convoluted inside systems to deter unwanted drake sperm...

Can you post pics of the injury? Need to assess how bad the damage is as to what course of action to proceed with... sorry, the well-being of the drake supercedes a show.... if not treated properly, prolapsed *can* end in death...
