*EMERGENCY* Rooster Has Possible Prolapse and Infection

She was just asking if she should soak him in epsom salt so she will do that here in a minute.

I reccommended nutridrench to her, and she will get some in a little bit if she can.

Immediately I thought it was a prolapse when she described it. But the vent isn't hanging out, there's nothing to push back in. There is just a very hard swollen area above and below the vent.

The advice about cleaning, determining exactly what is happening here, medicating is valid in a recent incident. This has been going on for a while, and in my opinion the kindest thing would be euthanasia.

He's totally been acting fine until about an hour ago. They are with their chickens ALL the time so he couldnt have been this bad for very long

IMG_0479.JPG This area looks like a wound of some sort. The angle of the picture makes it hard to tell. It could be pecking from the others.

After soaking him she doesnt see any maggots at all. Could it be flystrike wven though she foesnt see maggots?

If she can get SWAT, an ointment for horses that contains permethrin, 10% permethrin spray on, or Screwworm spray, those will all kill any maggot larvae on the skin. and the SWAT would smother any left behind. Plain Triple Antibiotic or Neosporin ointment would also work to help prevent infection and possibly smother maggots after the soaking bath, once he is dry. Epsom salts is fine, but they can also just use dishwashing liquid in the water. If there are maggots, he may need more than one soak. But I also agree with Sourland that if he is too sick or far gone, it might be good to end his misery.

More pics including what his poop looks like. It is purple because he has blue kote on.

Ok thank you. He's a little stronger than he was because he got up and ran out of the bath. This hasn't been going on for very long, i understand what you are saying but they are still trying to save him.

They gave him good vitamins and electrolytes so hopefully he perks up a little more

Try giving him some chopped eggs, tuna, or chopped liver. Wet chicken feed with a little spoonful of plain yogurt can be tempting to them to get fluids into them. It sounds like he has some spunk left in him, so we hope that he can survive. They may want to crate him with food and water and a small low roost, so he is easy to catch, and they can check droppings and how much food and water he is taking.
