*EMERGENCY* Rooster Has Possible Prolapse and Infection

He can have a couple of things going on. Check his crop to make sure it is not impacted. Also, he may have some ingrown feathers that are infected and inflamed, causing the swelling. He may have been trying to alleviate the pain by rolling in the dirt. I would give a broad spectrum antibiotic, if available. Those epsom salt baths are good for drawing out toxins as well as, cleaning the area. He only needs a 10 minute soak each day.
Follow Eggcessive's advice, this is good solid treatment and procedure. You cannot tend to him or monitor his progress if he is running around.
Poor guy, I really hope things work out for him.
God Bless!

Thank you! I will pass this information on to her. I will keep you updated!

Crop issue is a possibility, but does no good to check during the day. Must check first thing in the morning, when it should be empty. Any other time after they start eating, you can't tell what's going on.

Have the birds had any worm medications?

Ok thank you! She wil check in the morning.

They haven't had any medications but have been having punpkin seeds regularly which should prevent any infestation..

He's totally been acting fine until about an hour ago. They are with their chickens ALL the time so he couldnt have been this bad for very long

I hope that you are correct. Chickens as prey animals are very good at hiding weakness of any sort. The dark black areas around his vent appear to be necrotic. This does not happen overnight. Hopefully he will recover.

Ok so will Tylan help if it is an infection? Her husband picked up Tylan 200 injections. That was all they had. Will this work? And if so how much should she give him?

The lowest dose on the syringe is .5

His skin is black because he is a svart... are you talking about it because his skin is black, or can you still tell it's necrotic even though his skin is black?

Quite evident, but thanks for pointing that out. No, I am talking about the earlier pictures Where it appears that necrotic lesions are present, and I do realize that pictures can be somewhat confusing. Again, good luck with the bird, and I am unsubscribed to this thread.

Yes, very hard to tell about necrotic or dead tissue with the black skin. During baths they can gently scrub off dead tissue with a rough cloth. If it bleeds, you are down to healthy tissue. If the vent is damaged, though there could be problems pooping. Tylan might help if he has anything going on with his gut, such as enteritis. It is not the best for wound infections, but might help. Procaine penicillin G (refrigerated at most feed stores under various brand names) can also be used, but must be injected. Dosage is 1/4 ml injected into breast muscle 1/4 inch deep once a day for 4-5 days using a 20 gauge needle on a 3 ml syringe. Oral amoxicillin is also good for wounds.
