Thank you chickenlady for your help this morning but I don't think we diagnosed it correctly. I looked in her mouth and there are no lesions or anything foreign in her mouth like a splinter etc. Her face is more swollen now. Both cheeks and under her eyes. I thought I would at least try Pen G. I found it but in New Hampshire and just found out you can't buy syringes over the counter here so I have no way of treating her with it.

She is acting like she has a sore throat. I made her some scrambled egg mixed with finely chopped spinach and pasta. She ate it and I will give her more tonight.

A vet visit is out of the question. I hope she gets well but if not and she is too uncomfortable I will have to cull her.

I am by no means as smart about chicken illnesses as many people on here, but maybe you should do a search on coryza. I hope it's nothing like that, but the swelling in the face is worrisome.

I sure hope she gets better.

Get to wallgreens or some sort of drug store, they have to sell syringes over the counter somewhere! Or the feed stores in the horse section. I hope she pulls thru for you

It may be an infection that has healed over. That is why you didn't see any cuts in her mouth. You could try warm compresses to bring any infection to a head. I had a hen with the same thing. Make sure you get the infection out. Penn G will take care of the rest.

You really need to post some pics if at all possible; there's many things this could be, and it's very had to know with any certainty without a pic. If it's coryza, she'll have a bad odor coming from her mouth, so open her beak & take a whiff. If it smells nasty, it's coryza, but I don't think that's what it is by your description.

could it be sinusitis? My friend just had a chicken with this, said she's seen it before this time of year. She said her drug of choice is Tylan 50, she gets hers at the feed store and injects 1/2 cc under skin at the back of the neck every day. They sell it in powder for drinking, too, but I think it's real expensive. She has all full size birds. I'd probably use half a dose for a bantam. She actually flushes her chickens nostrils with a syringe and water. My chickens would give me the evil eye and win the battlle, hers seem to let her do anything. I guess they know when you're helping them. Good luck.

Thank you all...I am very grateful for your input. As her symptoms progressed I susspect it is respiratory. The are all on Tylan in their water and I made them threehorses famous mash to help them get better.

Buying syringes in NH is difficult but it is for the best because of drug problems. The feedstore has the Pen G but you can't buy the syringe. I can go to Maine or Vermont to buy them but not here. I ordered some through firststatevetsupply.com. I want to be prepared for the next illness.
