We have a two year old, white, easter-egger who was attacked last night by a fox I think. Thank God she's still alive, and I am hoping she will pull a revovery. I'm hoping you can help.

The attack happened around midnight...and she had been drug near the edge of the yard, where the fox dropped her and ran off into the woods. I was afraid to move her at first because I thought her neck was broken, but she was able to move her feet, roll from side to side, open and close her eyes, so I assumed that she was 90% still intact.

I gently put her on the chicken stretcher, an old towel, and put her inside the coop. I went back to check on her at four this morning and she's still breathing, but has not appeared to move in any other way, she's still lying in the same position that I put her at 12:30 AM.

My concern is that the other chickens might bother her, we have three others (Rhode Island Reds)...Would you recommend I separate her from the flock for now? Any other recommendations about helping her out?

Any advice or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

I'd bring her indoors and give her a thorough examination for signs of puncture wounds. If possible, add vitamin supplements to its drinking water, and put feed within reach. After checking her, keep her calm by putting her in a dark, quiet location.

X2 what Pork Pie Ken said. DEFINITELY get her separated! The EE in my avatar was saved from a fox. When I brought her in the house she remained in shock for about 5 hours before she started to move at all. Find the puncture wounds and cleaned them really well with an antiseptic or antibiotic something. You may have to encourage her to drink by using an eye dropper to drip water on her beak. Maybe offer her some scrambled eggs when she shows signs of wanting to eat. When she starts getting back to normal put her on a feather fixer feed as I'm sure she's missing a big hunk of feathers (like this:

Please keep us posted and good luck!

Agree with Pork Pie Ken.

Talk to her in a gentle voice and say wonderful things to her, like how well she's recovering, how great she's doing, how her feathers are beautiful, how proud you are that she's hanging in there to make a full recovery.

If you have a tractor supply or feed store near you go down and buy a little bottle of poultry Nutri drench. give her a couple of drops in her beak . it's a great emergency nutritional supplement .wonderful for giving weak bird strength. it doesn't need to be digested. that's what's so great about it . Main lines directly into the bloodstream measurable in 10 minutes, 99% utilization, all natural.

then put some in her water for the next week while she's recovering .
half a teaspoon per quart of water and that will help give her more strength.
You can also use goat Nutri drench. I have with great success. just make sure you use the poultry instructions listed above.
Best success,
Karen
