I have a leghorn chicken that this morning is coughing up blood?

what is causing this?

A couple of possibilities, ILT (Infectious Laryngotracheiitis) can cause coughing up bloody mucous. I've never dealt with it, so only know from reading.

Also, possible the bird ate something sharp, glass, metal, plastic, that has caused an injury to the trachea or crop.

I'm sorry your hen is not well.

Coughing up blood can be from a number of things as suggested by @coach723

If you have vet care, that is your best option.

Photos of the blood, the hen and her poop along with more information about her symptoms would be good.

How does her crop feel?
Has she been injured - like an attack from a predator, has anything fallen on her that could have caused internal injuries?
Have you looked to see if she has any cuts inside her beak?
Did you notice if she had anything like a respiratory illness for the last few days before you started seeing blood?

thanks everybody for the help it seems it was minor as my hen is eating and laying today and the coughing has stopped and no more blood, so again thanks for the help for a first time owner.
