A local small holding near me has an ostrich in a paddock with a pond that has many ducks and some geese on it. I suspect an open paddock is fine but a more confined space might not be. The ostrich is definitely "guard dog" on the small holding

Extra large wire dog crate - for your bedroom (if you don’t sleep with them with their diapers on)
Secure play pen - for daytime
Heat lamp - if they’re outside during the day and it’s cold
Ratite feed
Food and water bowls
They poop ALOT, so they need material that can easily be changed out when inside the house
Bam! Now it’s emu time. They’re friendlier in the long run if they’re raised in the house or VERY close to you for the first few weeks or more.

And yes, emus and ducks definitely can live together. Mine live together!
