Emu baby chronicles :) NEW PIC pg 31!!

I feel like a little kid the night before Christmas! Especially considering that my dog unplugged the bator out of the wall half way through incubation and I didn't notice till the next morning!

Soooo I'm hoping that it's a tough little thing!

A long while back, a friend and I discussed trying this, but then we both agreed that:

1. Our husbands would kill us

2. It would be hard to keep in our yards

3. It would eat as much as a flock of chickens

Needless to say, we didn't try it. I do have an ostrich egg on my dresser, though. A friend brought back a bag of them from a lease down in South Texas. The land owner had ostrich hens, but no males, so the eggs would just dry up after awhile. I got one that had a semi-dried yolk...it felt like a rubber ball bouncing around inside it.

Too exciting! Emu's can take a couple of days to hatch. I've seen one hatching before when I lived in Australia. Not the whole hatch, the lady that owned them said it can sometimes take 2 days for them to get out.

FYI Emus when fully grown are very strong. Friend of DH had one and was trying to hold it down, not only did it kick him with it's sharp claws it dislocated his shoulder. Oh and as a kid growing up in Australia I was chased down and pecked in the head by one at a zoo. This was a "tame" emu and I wasn't anywhere near it at the time, it just ran up to me and went nuts.

Well in all my research I did find out that it can still be several days from this point till it hatches so I'm keeping my eye on it. No worries...I understand how emu's work...he or she already has a home in line should it hatch and thrive. We are only going to keep it till it is to large for us and thn it will move to a farm about a mile down the road that we can visit anytime we want.

Now back to bator watching for me!
