Emu Beating the heat!

LOL, you don't know how much your remarks makes me laugh. I kept this to watch the video because I too would love to have an emu to raise and play with. Have a friend that sells the chicks. Hers won't leave a human alone...wants all their attention all the time. Let me know if you get up the nerve to make the plunge. I'll dive in with you, haha!! We have 5 acres but in a subdivision with a home owners association. I can see myself and all my birds getting kicked to the curb for animal violations, hahahahaha!!!

They love being in water and nice wet mud when it's hot so I'm told. I would imagine they do need a shelter of sorts when it's super cold, stormy and lots of rain. I'd love to have one too. If we lived near each other we could share one, LOL!!!

dont waste your money on a shelter

Denninmi, I'm sure this new picture Foulman posted didn't help your situation much, hahaha!!! Guess you better bite the bullet and plan on getting one or two. I always feel they need the company of their own kind. I'd love to have one but only have 5 acres, am retired so not as much energy as years past and already have 2 young Miniature Australian Shepherds and to many peafowl that are all pets being fed from my hand and following me around. I can just see the Home Owners Association calling the tv show "Animal Hoarders", LOL!!! Either that or husband kicking me and the animals to the curb. I have a friend local that sells the chicks for $25 so me getting one would be so easy.

What would you recommend for them as shelter?

See the structure at the left end of our barn? We have two chain link kennels in there 6 ft tall. We placed the kennels then built the enclosure around them. The front is open for ventilation and so we can access the gates.

Here's a view from the fronts. The goats occupy the kennel on the right and the emus occupy the one on the left side. I have ordered custom clear vinyl tarps to cover the chain link fronts and gates for the winter. The animals like to see out and interact with the guard donkeys at night so I chose clear tarps. This will be our first winter with the goats, emus and these enclosures but they should be fine. We had a huge storm recently and they stayed nice and cozy. I store 50 lb bags of goat feed and emu feed in their enclosure. They have hanging feeders and bucket hangers for water. The goats have a raised platform for sleeping and hanging out. On a rainy day these enclosures are also occupied by 18 free range chicken freeloaders who don't want to be cooped up.
