Emu Egg Hatch-along

Inquiring minds want to know… do you all think that an emu egg or two would fit into a brinsea 28x incubator (obviously with the egg holders taken out) has anyone ever tried this? I can’t incubate any right now, but maybe next season! If they could fit in my incubator, than I am definitely going to do it, after following this awesome thread!!!

I don't know the dimensions so I have no point of reference. I use a Nurture Right 360 with a 1.5" extender and a square styrofoam that accommodate well.

Thanks for sharing your success! Baby C (no one has actual names until I get dna back) is doing pretty well with it and seems to be getting stronger. I did take it off overnight because sometimes baby gets stuck on its side but thats getting better too.

I also got the playpen up today so they have more space during the day for the next few weeks.

Baby B is a screamer if I am not in the room even though baby has a buddy. Silly baby!

Now if everyone can send prayers and positive thoughts for Baby D! Still no whistling that I can detect, but wiggling.

A screamer, huh? I'm curious what a baby emu scream sounds like.. any chance you can record and share?

Ok, perhaps screaming isn't the correct term, but in it's little baby emu voice I equivalent it to screaming. There's the cute little whistles that they make from time to time and then there's a non-stop at the top of their lungs whistle in panic cuz they can't see you. It's like when you put a toddler down for a nap and they cry from their crib at the top of their lungs till they realize no one's coming and go to sleep. Although, I find it easier to leave it crying toddler

Do you have a picture of it maybe? I don't have one either, so I'm not sure. You could measure the incubator space maybe and I'm sure you could find emu egg measurements online to see if they'd fit.

Nothing to report other than it's still wiggling! Today is day 55. I've been looking around online a lot and I reached out to the local breeder who has hatched hundreds of baby emu. She said the only time she does a safety hole is if they've actually been peeping for a couple days. She reminded me that a lot of factors contribute to actual hatch date and each egg is individual even if set at the same time. She said that age of the egg when it started incubation and the size can definitely delay hatch.

Ugh! I tell you what if this baby does hatch, I think it already has a name. Pokey!

Aww well I hope he makes it! Sometimes I back the temp off a bit during the hatch, that always seems to help my ducks a lot. I wonder if it would help or do anything? I go back to 98 for the ducks. Maybe you could do 95-96 for emus? Idk. That just makes them more active from what I've seen. They can get hot and worn out during hatching.

I had to do this with one of my babies (Dundee). He had splayed legs and curled toes. A couple of days in the hobble and he was walking much better. Another day or two in the shoes, and then finally just a toe splint for a stubborn toe. He was always the smallest of the four but ended up looking great and kept up with the rest of them.

How many emus do you have total?

Only two. The four babies all went to a gentleman with a farm in TN. He loves animals, and especially emus. Very grateful they went to a good home. Meanwhile Fred and Ethel continue to lay eggs.

If you have any extra fertile eggs just laying around you aren't doing anything with let me know, lol.
I hope mine is still good, but I watched it for quite a while today and nothing. It's still on track for weight though. Idk

I can HEAR the sound you're describing. I had one that was like that - his name was Paul Hogan. When he was a chick he was peeping constantly one evening. I finally went in and held him for just a couple of minutes and then put him back in with his siblings and he was fine.

I have never changed the temp before. I wonder... Its so hard to stay hands off. I have to keep telling myself it's still within the window, it's still within the window. The lady I was talking with last night said if there's no peeping she definitely wouldn't touch the egg. This is so hard. I have also done several assisted hatches on my call decks because they don't always hatch on their own, but still survive. This emu egg is so daunting with not being able to confirm what's going on in there other than visualizing Wiggles.

I definitely want to raise them longer than I did last year and decide. It was an easy decision last year since I wanted boys. I also had holy heck a lot going on last year with two goats pregnant and kidding right around the same time so I didn't have a lot of extra time. This year I've committed myself to the Emu hatch and maybe a few geese and call ducks and that's it.

Depending on if this other one hatches and genders I'll go from there. I'd consider keeping two or even three boys if they get along well on the farm here or a pair.

The two eggs I have set to hatch around the 1st of March I am still pretty much certain there's nothing happening in there but I keep turning cuz no one's stinking. Also, baby f is still in that's due to hatch with this group only because it hasn't started stinking. I'll crack it this weekend.

Yep! You know! Like you said oftentimes it's enough to just go back there and make your presence known for a second and then baby calms down. I also have a goat like that. He's an actual screamer and screams just for the sake of hearing his own voice I'm pretty sure. The noise he makes makes me think that somebody is chopping a leg off or something and it seriously gives me a panic. I go down there and he's just standing there staring at me like what took you so long? He's the goat That Cried Wolf and I fall for it because God forbid something really did happen to him.

Plus, how do you deny this face

No worries, it's only day 28
