Emu Egg Hatch-along

Pics
@MGG well the deed is done. It was another little blonde baby and it was malpositioned with only partially absorbed egg yolk. It looks to have tried to pip at the bottom of the egg based on some staining on the shell. 😢😔

Well at least now I know there's probably nothing I could have done to save it. I opened up baby f as well and there was definitely a developing embryo I would say maybe about 30 days old obviously deceased. I almost opened the other two because I'm 99.9% sure but as I've said they're not stinking or oozing so we'll wait a little longer. I think it's day 35 tomorrow.

So now I get to be thankful for these two Little Cuties I have and enjoy them. I sure hope and pray when I send off for DNA I don't have two girls. I'd rather two boys or a pair.

On another note, it's not a very good bird day around here for me. I bought four gorgeous show quality Sebastopol geese last May. Two were straight run and two were gray Saddleback females. Well it turns out in the pairing that produces Saddleback females there's like a .05% chance of it being a male. I had my suspicions a month or so ago, but today it was confirmed when I saw him mating, which female sometimes do, but there was also a penis!! Grrrrr! Had I known at the time of purchase there was even a slight chance of them being male I wouldn't have bought them. They were a last-minute impulse because they were available and I was told they were females. So once again I have two girls and four boys. I just rehomed three boys so you see where I'm at🤦‍♀️
Awww I'm sorry. It was dead already when you opened it?

Hopefully the younger eggs are still alive. You haven't seen any wiggling from them yet?

Yeah I bet they're getting really cute!!! How long do you think it'll take to get results back? Do they just email them or something?

Oh no, I'm sorry! I've been super hen heavy on everything lately which is definitely annoying. They end up pairing up with the wrong drakes because I don't have enough. At least if they're nice sebbies hopefully you won't have a hard time finding a home for them. Do they do well in pairs?

I guess it's doing ok, thanks for asking. Still no signs of life though. I haven't seen any wiggling and if I do the heat test thing both ends feel the same to me.
It's not stinking or anything so far though. We'll see. Fingers still crossed. How about yours?
Ah! I hope this one is just hiding it's wiggles! Maybe you can find some local eggs and sneak them in the incubator when no one is looking. Have you checked craiglist?

Yes it had stopped wiggling and had passed. Very sad.

No wiggling in the other two. One is not leaning at all so I am certain that one is a no go and the other is leaning too much. Not hopeful at all.

I have my two cuties! They are getting really silly and trying to hop. I took the hobble off the blonde baby and it's doing well. They are exploring their water and a flashing ball toy they are fascinated with. Dna well go out on Monday and I'll have results the following week. I mail in the egg shell lining.

The geese do well in pairs. I hate to rehome them. They are such beautiful geese. Maybe I'll just relocate 2 boys to their own pen for breeding season and see if I can get a few more girls. I am so picky about rehoming/ selling. I am not good at it.

No wiggling, but it's too early for that too, I think. Day 29 , today. Only a temperature difference 🫢

@FNF I finished watching your uploaded baby videos today. So cute and funny! I love how you adapted your pens with cardboard, towels, etc. I definitely do the same. I can't believe you got away with keeping them in the kitchen 🤣 My husband draws very few lines for my crazy animal adventures, but after one year raising 4 chicks in the kitchen I have been banned. How long were they there and inside? Every year he says no more birds in the house. Well, you see how that goes for him. 🤣 I am blessed.

Your videos look like mine sitting in the pen hanging out and playing. Speaking of playing, did you find any toys they really liked?

They have decided that kale and strawberries are yummy and considering pecking at the actual feed. They are so sweet. I am in love!

They are the sweetest, aren't they?? Mine lived in the hall bathroom off the dining/kitchen area for....definitely two weeks, maybe more like three?? I'd have to go back and look at my calendars where I tracked their milestones lol. Because they were so cute my husband wasn't too annoyed, but he was definitely relieved when they were relocated to the barn tack room! I have so many more videos to upload just haven't gotten to it but they were such a little barrel of laughs. Hand raising them is so much fun, but it's amazing how fast they grow too. My favorite is when they get to be around a foot or two tall, they're truly little dinosaurs and so entertaining. I'm so glad your babies are doing well and can't wait to see videos of their hops and dances!

Any ideas for entertainment or enrichment that you used?

Oh I forgot - sort of… I got a little grid ball with a bell inside it that they seemed to find interesting. I hung it from the side of their dog crate. I think it was just a parakeet toy. I also had a little mirror that they did seem to like for a while as well. Once they were big enough to go outside and run I’d throw dog toys that they’d chase after.
