Gill isnt toooooo far from me...

You do have to have a male and a female to get eggs.

I was told to be careful when buying a male, because my father was telling me he was talking to an Emu farmer in Georgia, and that they can do a really easy procedure to make a male look like a female. I guess it messed up the market for Emu's for a little bit because people were buying "females" that were actually castrated males. And of course it wouldn't produce eggs. This was probably 5 years ago, so I'm sure its different now, and that lady in Gill looks like she has a pretty nice facility going.

Ok for those of you that do have Emu what can you tell me while I qm waiting on the book about raise emu , like how long does it take to hatch and what temp , what do you feed them after they hatch , and as they grow what is there diet and what do you feed them as they grow from young one to there adult size , is there any special needs they need like vitamin , shots special care .
I see everyone says make sure you have at lease a 6' high or higher fence in pen but what about a coop or do you just have a roof top open shelter , do they take to our north east temps. during our winters up here in the state of Northeast Mass. - Berkley Ma. That is .

Thanks Alan

hey guys i worked a lupa zoo in ludlow and they had them there . i hatched and rasied babies that r there now

go there and talk to the owner hes always there he will sell u eggs or chicks if he has them . just ask him a price

The eggs take around 48-55 days to hatch. Mine hatched on day 48. The temp in the incubator should be about 97°. I've read that they're pretty hardy and only need a three-sided shed with a roof for shelter, although they will rarely use it. As for food, Purina makes a ratite starter in their Mazuri line of feeds. Most feed stores that sell Purina should be able to order it for you.

Hello neighbor I’m in Berkley
I to just purchase The Emu Farmer's Handbook and been searching for infor. On raising and keep emus . I plan on getting some hatching eggs next year 2011 this way I can do more research and get the coop and run set up this year for next year.

I know Taunton, MA has sticker rules then Berkley ,MA. Cuz a friend of mine live in a part of Tauton where his new neighbors has complain about him have a few chickens to the town where he was told to get rid of them after he had them for 10 yrs . so I’m not sure about Taunton , but so call Berkley we can have anything farm relative ( man my spelling sucks good thing for my mini dictionary) each year the Berkley animal control office comes buy each yr. from Sept thru Oct . what we have and how many of each and checks our animals for they health by looking at them and the pens /runs , make sure there is food and water in there pens and checks where and how we keep the extra food and what we keep it in , then give a paper saying we pass and the amount of each breeds of birds .

As I been told they never did this before it’s only the last 3 yrs that there been doing this why I not sure but I thinking they will start charging us X –amount of dollars each yr for this ..............

i live in groton and there used to be an emu farm down the road from me in pepperell. Wish they were still around, massive birds are sweet.

I have come to realize, lot of things are in Pepperell.... I grew up in Cambridge, and the only time I ever screamed like a girl was when we moved here... It involved a giant horse running free, 2 peacocks, a legless sheep and the cat lady.... I am still recovering 7 years later..
