Ending a life peacefully

Dry ice releases out carbon dioxide, unlike carbon monoxide carbon dioxide will burn your lungs and suffocate the bird for several minutes. I would not recommend this for a quick death but it will work.
You are right of course. I just couldn't do the other methods for some personal family reasons. I agonized about it and tried to be as kind as possible. Sometimes life just hands us impossible choices. I couldn't do a method that would damage the body of him. The family didn't know I had to cull our rooster and my autistic son would have taken weeks to deal with the idea of culling. I don't recommend it as a way to do regular culling, but I was in an impossible situation. After he passed I placed him under the cactus near the back door and "found" him the next day claiming he passed quietly in his sleep. The family buried him with full military honors next to the shed in the back yard. It was really one of the most awful things I have ever had to do. Folks here were very supportive of what I did and talked me through the worst of it.

One of my hens has been sick for a long time and I had been hoping Nature would follow its course. Her belly has been distended for a while and she is now waddling around. But she is still motivated by food and has been eating and drinking.
This morning I finally had a chance to look at her up close as she could not get out of the coop on her own. My coop is 2 feet off the ground and they use ramps to reach the ground. She is a rescue hen and has been always on the wild side, which is why I was trying not to upset her too much.
What I saw this morning was worse than expected. Her belly is so distended that the cloaca is shut up so I suspect she is defecating internally. She also has lice.
I think it's time. I need to do something. I was hoping that someone might give me some ideas as to how to maybe just give her some sleeping pills so she can go to sleep peacefully. Because of the size of her abdomen I think that any conventional forms of dispatching would be painful for her. Plus I really can't do it! I welcome any suggestion that may help. Thank you

The quickest method is going to be decapitation. Get a log, put two nails about an inch apart and slide her neck into it until the beak is caught by the nails, stretch out the body and take a quick strong strike to the neck. Do not release into the wild as that is cruel to the bird any it will suffer.

:hitI just don't like seeing any thing die. To much death in the world.:hit
Unfortunately everything will die and it is our responsibility to make sure that animals we care for are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Sending an animal to their death in the wild that will be prolonged and stress inducing is very irresponsible and cruel. The most humane method is to do it yourself using the quickest means possible with minimal stress to the animal.
