Hi Colin

Where in the North East are you and what breed of birds do you have. I'm near Consett. I've just started fermenting feed (both mixed corn and pellets)for my flock and they love it. Like you, I have cockerels from last summer awaiting processing, when I can find the time and pluck up the courage!. My pullets that hatched last summer have been laying for a couple of months now, but my older girls have taken the winter off. Not sure what I am going to do with all the eggs when the other girls come on line again! I started with just a trio or exchequer leghorns last Jan and I now have 40+ birds of various breeds. It's very addictive!

Regards

Barbara.

Hi I'm in guisbrough its on the way to Whitby I've got six Barney's two light Sussex and four Moran's which I love they have such a loving way about them? Is that odd.anyway I've also got some rodeies which brings the flock to about 20ish your right it is adictive even when its snowing and blowing a gale I still don't mind going down to feed the girls.nice to now there are like minded folk in the area.

Yes I am aware of Guisbrough but never had cause to visit. The closest I've got is probably Yarm where my cousin lives. Actually I've never been to Whitby either!

I've got a Rhodie and a couple of Marans... a black copper and a blue copper. I love the dark brown eggs but personality wise they don't do it for me. Maybe it's because I got them as point of lay hens rather than raising them myself. Also, I've only had them a few months so we are still getting to know each other. How do you find your light sussex? My neighbour has a couple and 4 Croad Langshans that are 2 yrs old and all 6 have been a real disappointment as regards laying. He also has an 8 year old Black Star and she easily outlays any of them and outshines them with personality too. He is so disillusioned he is thinking of culling the Langshans and he paid a lot of money for them from a breeder.
Are there any other breeds that are on your wish list? I seem to have ticked most of the boxes I wanted pretty quickly. I think I would maybe like a couple of Black Rocks or some other black sex link and maybe a buff Orp or two and possibly a gold and silver laced Wyandotte
My favourites in my flock at the moment are my broodies, a bantam silkie/cochin cross called Frances and an araucana cross that I think probably has some leghorn in her judging by her build. I call her Tasha because she has a moustache. She was wild when I first got her but since she has raised 2 large broods she has become much more tame although she is still really quirky. I also love the barn yard mutts they have reared. In particular a cream legbar x RIR who just hit 23 weeks last Fri and started laying me beautiful olive green eggs. She is without doubt my friendliest hen and she is behind me wherever I am in the yard, often tugging on my trouser leg for attention. I intend to hatch more of that cross this Spring/summer once my broodies get in the mood! I also have a few Welsummers and cream legbars and the leghorns, so I have a good mixture of colours in my egg box.

Anyway, it's good to make your acquaintance especially since we are near neighbours compared to most other people on this forum!
