Update from the Barrett Farm...
I haven't said anything about their condition out of fear of jinxing their condition.
After learning that the Elecampane would not be effective for the laryngotracheitis, I took a gamble with all or nothing as my motto. The birds sounded so bad, I was prepared that I would loose them all and opted for something I have never given my birds before.
I went to the medicine cabinet and pulled out three packets of Ayurveda herbs for immunity and viruses, called Samahan. For two days, I scrambled four eggs and stirred in three packets, cooled and fed to the hens. The first day, I really thought one of my older Orpingtons would be dead in the morning, her breathing was heavy and labored, she sounded like she was drowning. I was ready to ask my husband to cull her but decided to wait because I really hoped she would fight to get over this illness.
Tonight, the whole flock sounds great! This was the second night I went to lock the coop and there was no snoring or rattling, they were quiet and sounded like normal.
Samahan - Maintains good health by stimulating and boosting immunity. Day to day health upkeep. Effective in preventing 15 upper respiratory symptoms associated with colds.
Turns out this remedy contains Vasaka which I gave sprinkled on the eggs before the Elecampane.- I bought the Vasaka (Himalayan) and Samahan from Amazon for a horrible secondary upper respiratory infection I had in May.
I am very happy and glad we dodged this illness.
Lesson learned? If the girls come out into the big yard, the bird baths have to be treated, sterilized, rinsed and cleaned so we don't catch or share the crud from the wild birds!
Thanks for your help EggDropSoup, your help saved my flock!
