We took my mare to have her wolf teeth removed/teeth floated back in April I think. To cut a long story short, it turns out that her wolf tooth is still there (she only has one). I can't remember whether the vet said she didn't have any, or they didn't need removing, i'm getting too old to remember that far back apparently! Anyway it's aggravating as i'd given her a couple of months off using a bit to heal, to give her as few excuses as possible.

I also have a 2.5 yr old filly that's going away to be started this fall. Does anyone know when the wolf teeth are usually removed? It would be a whole lot more convenient to take them both at the same time, as it's a 3hr round trip.

You are supposed to have it done before they are "bitted" meaning before you introduce a bit into the training. Some people will even attach a bit to the halter for a few days to get them used to it.

We have always had them removed between a year and 2 years old. Basically before training to ride.

They should definitely be removed before having a bit in their mouths. The bit can clang up against the wolf teeth and it will hurt them... Some horses get their wolf teeth in later than others. I had my stallion's removed when he was around 2, and they were just tiny. Luckily my horse dentist is very good at his job, and got them out pretty easily. Vets around here aren't trained equine dentists, and the last time I used the vet, my poor horse was bleeding

I highly recommend trying to find a horse dentist that can come to you
