Errr...too much grit?

After doing a little research, I've decided that sand is the best option for us as well. Our coop HAS to be built on concrete with an attached run, so to avoid forcing the chickens to walk on bare concrete we're going to use sand. Not to mention, I've hear it's cooler in the summer for them, and our summers get HOT!

If you go with playground sand, be prepared for a lot. lol The sand will settle and they kick a lot out, eat it,etc. For an 8x8 run I needed 10 bags of sand, that are 50lbs each. It provided a 3 inch layer for them which should be more than enough for a long time. I use a cat litter scooper and just scoop the poop right off when its hardened and toss it in the composter.

I'm actually thinking construction sand...we can get it for SO cheap here, and it's a little bigger grains so I don't have to supply grit...yay!

Lucky you!!! I went with general sand from Lowes, its outside with the stones and stuff. It was around $3.80 a bag, I believe its the same as playground.

See that's backwards to what we have here. Maybe there's different kinds of construction sand, I dunno never bought it. My grandpa laid brick though, what he got by the truckload was of course for the concrete between the bricks and it was very fine and very uniform. What they sell for playground sand varies a lot, but it's generally bigger grits. Some kinds of it have small pebbles in it as well as large grit sand. My mom said the bigger grits were so that it brushed off us kids easier than the fine stuff.
My parent's yard is full of VERY very super-fine sand, more like dust than sand. I think it's from the river. Mom always complained about us tracking the sand in her kitchen

Our feed stores don't have chicks either. Unless some in Palmer or Wasilla do? The one hatchery (I think he actually ordered them from somewhere but not sure) closed down this year and everyone is scrambling to find chicks.

Cut's down on those impulse chick buys
