If you go with playground sand, be prepared for a lot. lol The sand will settle and they kick a lot out, eat it,etc. For an 8x8 run I needed 10 bags of sand, that are 50lbs each. It provided a 3 inch layer for them which should be more than enough for a long time. I use a cat litter scooper and just scoop the poop right off when its hardened and toss it in the composter.
