Ethics

I worry about it because even if I'm doing the right thing if I were to get eggs from someone who doesn't care it does affect me and my flock. Anymore I don't get eggs from anyone that I haven't developed a relationship with. Could they still be lying? Yes, but I think the odds of it are a lot less. So I do think it's worth stressing over to worry about what other people are doing.

How would you go about discussing it, if general examples can't be used?

I would be careful of how you mention the examples.

Peoples feelings could be hurt, they might take it personally, even if they aren't the person you are thinking of when you post your general examples.

Again, if you feel something or someone is not ethical, don't deal with them.

ETA: I'm bowing out of this thread now. Ya'll discuss it however makes you happy.

Its a good topic. Selling sick birds or eggs that have transmittable disease can devestate other's flocks. People need to know about that.

If this thread helps newcomers and old as well to get 'new' information thats great.

With the popularity of backyard flocks growing and more people swapping, selling chickens/eggs I am sure this topic will be ever more pertinant for people.

Treat people the way you want to be treated , or,,, it may come and ,,,well,,,come back to haunt you .

I know that there are people who do things like ship sick birds, birds that are not what the buyer paid for, ect. These people are intentionally unethical if you ask me.

I also know a woman close to me that has started a family chicken farm, and doesn't have her breeds straight. She is getting better, but I see that she will list the colors or breeds wrong in her ads. She doesn't mean to do this, she just doesn't know. It may not have even occurred to her that there are people who take chickens very seriously. But I know her (which makes a huge difference in deciding who is ethical or not), and she doesn't try to come across as knowing everything-picks my brain whenever she can.

And for instance what if bought some hatching eggs from someone who tossed them (unwrapped) in a box with peanuts and nothing else? Andy when I addressed the issue they ranted and raved saying I was the problem and no adjustment would be made? These are the people we have to look out for. It is wrong to advertise that you are for example, an APA judge or someone who is a top competitor in shows, and not care how you ship eggs.

We all have to learn from mistakes and if we keep doing the things that are "unethical", there in lies the problem.

There's a thread for feedback on egg sellers. If I can find the link I'll add it.

The mods do an awesome job, and I have seen them add to topics in the 'sell' categories when they think somethings up. They get PM's on problems and keep an eye out for us.

Buyer Beware is still a good motto. I trade mostly with friends or folks who've been on BYC for a while.

If we are going to talk about ethics, we should discuss that it is unethical to assume that somebody is selling eggs from sick birds. A previous post was locked due to this. Many of us have more than one pen or coop. Just because the birds in one are ill, it doesn't mean the others are effected. Also, if the person selling eggs has ruled out the diseases that are transmittable to the eggs and waited until the birds have recovered, there is no threat.

Unless you have a foot bath and use it between every pen, then yes, the likelihood is that it is in all coops.

Most people do not find out what they have, therein lies a big problem, as most do not get a necropsy done.
