Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Great photos ChestnutRidge! I like the first roo in mid-stride. I guess I need to read up on the proper coloring for males. Are there photos somewhere of what I should be looking for? (I haven't read through this entire thread).
I still think I likely have 6 males and 1 female, and my males are all different in coloring, so I have a lot of choices.
There are two that I am not positive though. The combs on those two are small, but one has a pink tinge developing. I hope to post photos of them this weekend.

Are the chicks in your photo from the Easter hatch, Ron? Mine don't look quite as far along (no wattles on the roos yet). Maybe I can take some new photos this weekend.
Yes, they are from the Easter Hatch. I am feeding them Organic Pride Starter/Grower. I also gave them a baby cakes. It took them three days to eat it all. I also have let them gnaw several times on a forage cake. I don't want them to get too much calcium. I am going to switch them to Magill Ranch Cascade Grower soon. I am supposed to at 6 weeks, but I have to wait until the Drop from Azure Standard Delivers to my Area(Sorry if this is confusing--Azure Standard is like a Co op from Washington State that sends trucks through several western states).

Four of the Roos have wattles started. The Fifth one does not really have them yet but I am convinced that one is a Roo.
Mine were from the Easter Hatch, too. They're 5 weeks old, and it looks like 3 boys and 3 girls. I wish I had a properly colored male, but no such luck.

The three males: one very gray, one very white, and one very dark brown

I have three girls, two which look nearly alike and one which is lighter and had white wing feathers as a younger chick.

I love the one with the white breast and colorful back

These are quickly becoming my favorite breed here. Ok, the Dorkings are sweet too, and the Australorps...

those look like boys to me. 5 boys and 6 girls Yay!
I am so happy!

I want to keep 4 of the pullets. In a week or so I might go on a road trip to Clear Lake. A person from the Coast was interested in mine. I can get a breeding trio for her.

Hey CR, I have a roo out of Round Two that's a carbon copy of Mr Black, just 3 weeks younger...
I was going to hang on to him for just in case, but If i start hatching with success, I may not need to.

Don't judge your boys 'till the girls hit POL. I'll try to get you a pic of the six roos I have left.

Thank you, and definitely keep me in mind! A few days ago, I went over and looked at your pictures of Mr. Black at 5 weeks old: None of mine look anything like he did then. I think they'll all be handsome, friendly fellows, but I don't think any of them will be right for the foundation of the flock. I've been trying to keep DH from becoming too attached, but he always loves all the little roos. I think the grey one will be the closest, and I assume he will be one of those guys who is too gray rather than buff/red. That said, I'll hold onto them until later in the year before deciding what I have as you've recommended. As I said before, I think you've done an amazing job with your flock.

Has anyone had a white, gray, or dark male chick like these before? I'd be interested to see pictures of how similarly colored cockerels feathered out.

I have to admit I haven't checked too much into the SOP for them yet. I will get the Roos out tomorrow for pictures and maybe you can tell me what you think. One looks like he has a split breast, but I guess they can grow into those.

If I have a couple of good ones and you were closer I would share one with you. Virginia is pretty far away from me.

I was thinking my roo could have a sleep over at CRs place, if she doesn't get a good roo. Maybe it would be more like an extended camping trip. ;) glad to see you have 3 girls.

MD, I really only have one pullet that I can breed, so I'm relying on you to produce some good hatching eggs for next sping.

Ronott, I used to love getting our azure standard order when I was in CA. Our girls didn't like cascade feed, but they grew up on crumbles and they never took to the feed that looked like real food. Silly girls liked the processed stuff.
Our chicks here are being raised on countryside organics (looks similar to cascade feed) and they love it. Of course they don't know anything else.

The Cascade feed I get is crumbles. It's Non Soy, Non Corn. It has peas and fish meal in it among other things. All of the chickens love it.

I can't get countryside here. I tried to get King Feed Natural non soy, but the feed store said "we will order it in and let you know when it is here". They said that every time I called for three months. I did find it, but it was very far away from me--so far that the cost of gas would have made it cost more than the Cascade feed.

Good Idea about the Sleepover.

Here are updated photos of my suspect girls. Lots of photos of "Brownie" as I am really unsure of gender. These are all 5 weeks old.
Dark Brown- convinced this is a girl

Barred Brown (hoping this is a girl):

Brownie Not sure about this one.

Brownie with Barred Brown: You can see brownie's comb is not huge, but it is more pink than barred brown's.

And here's Brownie with a roo:

Any guesses on what I have here? 1, 2, or 3 girls? I'll try to put up roo photos later. Mine are all fairly light in color (unless Brownie is a roo).
