That is such a sad story - "forgot" the chickens? Lucky any made it for sure.

Quote: I found this to be true too this summer. I lost one Marans in each of two heat waves this summer in Woodland CA. The first time I added more shade to the pen. The second time I added a fan and when the last heat wave came, I added misters for the Marans pen and the layer yard.
The Basque just had shade. When I found the second dead Marans, I walked over to the pen with the Basque and they were barely panting and only one of the bigger cockerels had his wings out. They just looked at me for treats and pets as usual. Bye the way, it was 108 that day. Mine are not laying yet so I don not know if they keep laying when it gets that hot. I am sure I will find out next summer.

Just an old proverb.
@ Ron - my girls laid like usual in extended periods of 100° - 104°F.
55- 60gr eggs five and six days a week.
Thanks for the advice! They do seem to be very hardy, sturdy and vigorous birds. If the unsexed chick turns out to be a pullet, I may give them a shot at test breeding. If I don't lose size or production qualities I would definitely bring in some new blood and continue on. It's a fascinating prospect. I have also considered test breeding the rw cockeral to a white rock hen. That cross might make a nice meat bird.My Marradunas have no fear to roam. Very curious and brave for sure. As hardy as the breed is I'd say that a couple sibling matings aren't gonna hurt the vitality of the breed. Just be careful how much you do it. Line breeding will be your best bet once you established what your looking for since the gene pool is so small . Just my opinion. Some may argue that fact but I've done this long enough to know what I can and can't breed back. The hardier the breed the better your chances.
Sometimes bad things happen to good people.
I know, I've lost over 20 birds this summer to predators due to sloppy pen security.![]()
I working on it, though... we start clearing land for the permanent henhouse and breeding pens next week!![]()
