Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Thanks! I haven't been able to find my h info on the breed. I have been trying to pick one Breed I like out of all the breeds I have in my layer flock to set up a breeding pen for. I am really liking the EO the more I hear about them. Can any one point me to a good site with pics and breed standards?

Integrating my Basque cockerel into the flock went very smoothly!

Yesterday afternoon, I put him in a cage in the girl's coop. They pecked at him a few times through the wire. This morning I released him and everyone is getting along great. We named him GoGo short for the Basque word gogoko, or "favorite".

He appears to be quite a charmer, already mating the hens and his company is in high demand. The only pecking I saw was one hen knocking another out of the way, so she could stand by GoGo. :)

So far, he is great with people too. I am delighted.

He must be a good looking boy!

My little Basque hen chick that hatched with the Pita Pintas is a 5 week old Cockerel. I hope he is a good one--I need one of these for my breeding program.

5 week old Pita Pintas and one Basque hen:

Well, his legs look nice and yellow. I'll be spray painting mine!

I am feeding them King Feed Freedom Starter\grower. It is GMO Free, non soy, non corn. It is good feed.

I have 5 Basque hens that are two weeks old. I will get pictures of them this weekend. They all have yellow legs too. It is nice to not have that for a worry. I can focus on other things with them.

On the Chicken State University thread they are discussing Wellsummers. One of the experts said that the yellow comes from the Rooster and if you did not pay attention you can easily loose the yellow in your flock and when it is gone it is really gone.

I guess you need to try hard to use yellow legged roosters.

I saw the same comment and it has stuck with me. I need to go look again and make sure the biter isn't the one with yellow legs.

I should be getting some eggs from Megan soon.

I had a yellow legged rooster and crossed him with a yellow legged hen, but only 3 of the 5 resulting birds had yellow legs. Is that because of bad luck, or is that physically impossible and proof that the less dominant roo with white legs actually fathered those 2 chicks?

The original yellow legged cock is in the freezer now. He had gout and his feet were a mess. I did hatch a yellow-legged cockerel from him, but the white legged guy is much bigger and quite friendly in comparison.
