Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

I had a yellow legged rooster and crossed him with a yellow legged hen, but only 3 of the 5 resulting birds had yellow legs. Is that because of bad luck, or is that physically impossible and proof that the less dominant roo with white legs actually fathered those 2 chicks?

The original yellow legged cock is in the freezer now. He had gout and his feet were a mess. I did hatch a yellow-legged cockerel from him, but the white legged guy is much bigger and quite friendly in comparison.

The white legged Rooster might still have yellow genes. It is not simple but Breed him and see what you get.

This site has an explanation for it. If you do not get yellow legs, work on conformation and get a Cockerel from Megan's line later.

So the yellow legs are recessive?

Really, it does not matter that much to me because I don't plan to do a lot of breeding. I'll let those of you who are breeding perfect the bird and then I'll purchase your eggs! :)

That is a great idea!

It is recessive\dominant and sexlinked to the male.

apparently, it is also tied to skin color too. If the Male has yellow skin and white feet, he still has a yellow gene hiding? I hope I have that right.

I have 3 basque hens from 3 different sources and all three look different. One looks almost mille fleur. One looks like a white based mille fleur and one looks mostly golden with some dark in the hackle. Not that I am intending to breed, but which is more correct? I like all of them so I really don't care much...just curious. The white is my oldest and I really like her personality, which made me want more and I got eggs mailed (only one hatched and was a girl! then I picked another two up at Gilmanor but gave one to my friend who was just starting out with chickens.

I am thrilled to have Basque breeders in Virginia...seems like a lot of Basque here so I don't HAVE to breed or have a rooster. I can always get more basques!!!! which is great because it takes the pressure off somehow...Because of our strict import rules here it can be difficult to get the more rare breeds and I feel sometimes like I need to be able to make more and therefore keep a rooster from each breed I like.

I have 45 chickens and 12 are male! (freeranged so females can get away and are not over-mated, but still...crowing wars)

I love the laid-back nature of this breed. I am trying to have a variety of chickens but only from "nice" breeds. These guys are exactly the personality I am looking for!

The Spanish Standard is closer to the golden one.

Marraduna are from a Land Race Breed so unless one is working toward the standard it does not matter too much. They are lovely with their variations.

pysankigirl...........YOU ARE RIGHT......you are lucky to have some of the best EO breeders in the country right there in your state......4 or 5 that I know of!!! I'm sure they will do all they can to help you get started right................................MIKE
