My peeps came early, but they're BROKEN!!

This one is the worst - I found it with it's legs sticking straight backwards. It cannot stand or walk. When I hold it up, it acts like it wants to walk but it's little legs work in reverse. If it was walking on it's own, it would be moving backwards instead of forwards. I held it cupped in my hand for about 20 minutes and it seemed to help, but I have to go to work tomorrow and can't keep holding it 24/7. And I'm pretty sure my hand isn't warm enough for it. Can someone tell me what would cause this, and what I can do to help this chick? I used a Brinsea 20 Eco and never had hatch issues before so I didn't check the thermometer, but since they came 2 days early, I'm guessing the 'bator ran a little too hot. Would this have cuased the leg problems?

Two days early! I don't know what would of caused that. I've been getting hatches on day 20 but never day 19. Could be early developement with temp but don't know. How is the others acting. Did they all hatch on day 19?

5 hatched on day 19 (pipped early am day 19, hatched overnight day 19/20), 4 on day 20 (daytime), still waiting on 3. Today is day 21.

1 with 2 bad legs;
2 with 1 bad leg;
a couple move by scooching along on their belly, standing temporarily, then flopping back down.
several seem either ok or near enough that I think in a few days they will be fine.

I tried to hobble this chick last night. Of course being my first try I didn't do a very good job and the bandaide came off during the night. If I hold him up and let his legs dangle, they are stiff and appear to be hyperextended and stretched behind the chick. Gentle coaxing will flex the legs properly again. They just don't stay in the proper position. It almost appears to be neurological, but I'm no doctor. I think this is "spradle leg". I didn't get too far researching the cause last night.

After examining them again this morning, they have improved greatly. I think they'll all be ok, except this one chick.

I have to say though, that these chicks are not afraid! Several of them come over to check me out and climb on my hand every time I reach in. I have not seen them panick.

I have given Vitamin b complex to my chicks if they aren't acting "perfect" it really helps..got it a walmart...
I would be so happy if I could get half the eggs to hatch...man it is killing me!
Mdads...so sorry for your lost!
CJwaldon. ...I use a small rubberband, make a loop in one end with a knot and the other wrap it around the leg and back though and slip its little leg in the loop...works great...geez not that I have tons of problems...lol

I hobbled him again this morning and shortly later found him with his feet straight back flat behind again, bandaide and all. I think I'll but him in a snug sock overnight tonight to semi-cocoon his legs under him. I tried unsuccessfully to get him to drink this morning. I'm not too worried about that yet, but I only have a couple of days to get this guy mobile so he can drink on his own. Don't think they'd appreciate me taking a chick to work . . .

Cydney83 - Thank you for the rubber band idea!

Thanks not looking too good...It was hard to see movement on lockdown night...so maybe I didn't see movement...
I like to rubber it works for me...I have heard you can but they in a cup to hold they up...best of luck!
