Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Pics
I have read thru this whole thread. Thanks for all the amazing pics and great information. I too, have a farm and am looking for a true dual purpose bird. Has anyone actually butchered a roo to eat. How does it compare with other DP's like a dorking? I plan to get some eggs to hatch from skyline.
Has anyone got the greenfire EO's??? I was looking at getting a few for more genetic diversity.
PS, does anyone specialize on the naked neck version? I think they are really interesting.

I did read the article on the meat qualities of the basque chickens. It is nice to hear from someone who has actually eaten one in real life. I am quite interested in the la fleche breed too. I like the looks of them and I really like a black bird. And I hear they are quite tasty too.

My chickens usually hatch on day 20 also. But as of now I'm halfway through day 19 and have 4 external pips!

Flowerchild, have you went to the EO website? I think maybe someone there has processed an EO?

I can't wait to try some fried EO. I'm still working on my La Fleches. Bulk is an issue with them right now. My stock came from Duane Urch because I was told he doesn't cross breed them. I don't believe Ill be selling La Fleches until I get some size on them first. But I've heard the La Fleche is a tasty bird.

Wow. I totally have not been getting update on this thread like I usually do! Congratulations to all those with babies. Gubi on our EO forum has eaten EOs and says they are a good size and feed a family of 5. We haven't eaten any yet on account of their fine temperament, but I plan or harvesting 3 or 4 roos this winter. The only ones we hatched this year are 10 weeks old and most of the roos are bigger than the broody lavender Ameraucana Mommas.

I am never sure of sex til about 2-2.5 weeks. Usually the larger chicks tend to be male. The red probably means they'll have more black, maybe too much, hard to say. I had 2 reddish ones, one was male one female, but have very little brown. Probably the best barred birds will be yellow chicks with a white or paler dot on the head. This breed is a race and there is a fair bit of variation (and vigor) we are still hatching all colours of chicks some have a dark line on the head too!

I am excited for all these hatches, it is great for this breed. I am pretty sure the source of all the North America EOs is Eric Rivard in Quebec who we got ours from, unless someone says they imported directly from Spain. It is amazing how quickly you see how friendly and sparky these are. I think it is so cool everyone else is starting to see this too, that me and James and the other Canadians I have shared these with are not deluding ourselves!
