Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

I think 1, 2, 4, & possibly more are girls from the photos, although I could definitely be wrong since I'm brand-new at EOs. I think 3 and 7 are definitely boys, and I'm unsure about 5 and 6 but am thinking they could be female, too. Anyone else want to make a prediction?

(Isn't this fun?!?! I am loving all the photos!)
1 & 2 looks like males to me, if they have barring on the feathers. 6 looks like a female because I don't see any barring. The other colors I'm not familar with. Haven't seen the really dark brown coloring, but looks like a female. Good looking group. I agree with Chestnut, I love seeing all the photos.

Ron, you have your EcoGlow outside? How is that doing for you? I reallly want to put my Easter chicks outside in their grow-out pen, but it has been in the low 40s at night and I wasn't sure that the EcoGlow could keep up. I would make my life a lot easier if I could move them outside. Do you think they'd be okay with temps in the 40s and just the EcoGlow 20? I'm nervous about the idea, but I have more chicks hatching this weekend, a 20 page paper to write to finish my master's, a spare EcoGlow, and an extension cord....

I am not sure on the sexes of all of my chicks yet. Here are half of them from Monday....

And the rest (I crashed Power Point while working on it and didn't feel like doing the second three again...)

Blue Left

Yellow

And Pink (uncooperative little thing... kept trying to run away.)

I think Orange, Green, and Yellow are definitely boys. I think Blue R and Blue L are definitely girls, and I am undecided on Pink. I love the strong barring on little Yellow roo, but I am thinking that means that he is heterozygous. What do you think? I realllly want a roo with nice yellow legs and homozygous barring, even though I know those are "paint" and not structure. As of the moment, all three potential roos are very big and robust, but I won't go with an undersized fellow if they grow out unevenly. How do these guys compare with what you are seeing?
I agree with your assessment. I think pink is a female. I haven't noticed any barring on any of my pullets and of course the combs help to figure it all out. By week 5, I think it was really obvious. Can't wait to see how the dark barring chick ended up. Good luck with your hatch this weekend.

Thank you both for your input! I guess I really don't understand the barring pattern. I have a barred rock, and I realize it's the striped pattern you are referring to, but when I look at these chicks, they are all so speckled. I can't tell which are barred, and which just have flecks of other color. I can see it clearly when it is obvious, like on the wing on Chestnutridge's chick, "yellow", but otherwise I am lost.

I finally took some photos of my birds. They are just a little over 2 weeks, and I'm hoping someone will weigh in on my guesses at sexing, unless you think it is to early. There are 7 chicks.

In this photo of #2, you can see the light color and the brown alternating. In the females I see a more solid coloring or at least no banding. Hope that helps.

I see what you are saying. The feathers are tiny though, - little brown feathers, each with a white tip. I went back and studied my birds some more, and unfortunately, #4, the only one I thought was a girl because her comb is so small, "she" seems to have barred feathers sprouting out of the back of her neck. You cannot see them in my photo, as my thumb is over the back of her neck. I also saw another with definite barring back by his wing, so I suppose I will get better at detecting it as they grow. I'm starting to wonder if I have any hens! Time will tell.

I'm not an expert doing this. it's just what Im seeing based on what I saw on my birds. The one that had the blurry comb picture looked looked like a girl to me, in then on-blurry photo. (forgot what number it was)

Next week things might be a bit clearer.

Well, you are much more expert than I am, since I've never seen this breed. I appreciate your input. I hope you are right about the one in the blurry photo.
I know I'll find out eventually. I just need to be more patient.

I've got to get these chicks out of the house soon! There are 13 others, in addition to the 7 Basque. DH is building a mobile hoop coop, but it is not done yet. I have a grow-out section in my other coop, but it is currently occupied by a hen recovering from sickness. Yesterday, I doubled the size of the brooder, and now they are running and flying about like crazy!

It is chilly here. The pears and plums were in bloom, but got hit by frost last night. A very strange spring, weather-wise.

I hadn't even noticed the barring. Naturespace has a couple groups of adolescents now, so she certainly has more experience than us newbies.

I'm now going back and forth on Orange being male or female.... I just need to wait a few weeks and stop trying to guess!

Today is Day 20 for my German New Hampshire hatch. I usually have a pip by now. We had a big thunderstorm last night, and the air cells are too small in about half of them, so I am super-paranoid right now.
