Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

CR, how many GNH Roos did you get? If we find a place to buy before you get rid of them, I might have to get one. A Welsummer/GNH mix might be nice too.
I feel like a mad scientist over here.
They're a little over 3 weeks old now, and I've got three with thick, reddening combs, so I think I have 3 boys and 3 girls of the remaining 6. I'll definitely be holding onto them until this August or so when they start crowing, so just let me know how things go. I'm sure we'll hear about it if you find a place - we'd better, anyway!

Still loving my EOs. They're about 6 weeks now and "Pink," who I thought was a pullet, has sprouted a big pink comb and turned into a cockerel. So, 2 girls and 4 boys. You know what? The 4 boys all grew in white wing feathers first, and the two girls both grew in buff. So, NP's theory held exactly with my tiny sample. He's actually looking like he'll be a proper-ish color. Let me go download some pictures from my camera, and I'll be back...

So, my guys are the same age as Ron's - from the Easter Hatch.

Here's "Pink" who just turned into a boy:

12 days ago when he was passing for a girl (left) -

And now, at 6+ weeks -

Here are some other pictures from yesterday.

Pecking my shoe as usual ("Pink" is in the middle. See how small he is? Late to mature too. Not ideal.)

I only have 2 pullets: a slate-legged girl (white skin + greyish pigment) and this girl. She may have yellow legs, but they might also be developing the layer of grey pigment (in which case they would be willow, yellow + grey) We'll see.

Slate-legged girl:

Darker red boy, white shanks (He's been the biggest and shyest cockerel so far):

White boy, white shanks:

Grey boy, yellow shanks (all of the pictures of him from yesterday look like this - zooming!):

Well, that's the crew. They also have a Leghorn companion. She was just part of the same hatch. I'd show you a picture, but she's even zoomier and very skittish, so this is the best one:

Oh my Mr Pink is tiny. I see why you might not want him as your roo. The girls look nice. Those other boys are outrageous! The dark red is amazing. I don't remember seeing a roo like that from any one elses photos. And Mr White, does he have any specks of color? Sure is an interesting group.

My white, well mostly white roo, is no longer the friendlist. My yellow legged guy is always the first to greet us along with the female, from the same hatch. The original two, are not as friendly. When they got integrated with the youngsters, they really stopped being the more aggressive ones. The 4 younger ones are always first to the fence edge for attention.

Our Welsumer roo is the first to "try" to crow. It is really cute, of course I have only heard it from bed. He only does it when they want out of the coop at 5:45am. Zzzzzzz. Good thing I have an early rising DH. :D

We will for sure let you know when we move, if we move. I'm already planning my breeding coops.

Love the photos! That is quite an assortment,of roosters, CR. I have 2 that look whitish-speckly (like pink), and 2 that are whitish with blotches of color. No pure white or darker colors. I have one that is smaller, like Pink. He was the last to hatch and had a really rough start, but he seems to be catching up in growth quickly. I'll have to take photos this weekend.
None of mine are that friendly, CJW, so photos will be easier. Funny how he noses up to the camera. I do have one pullet who always approaches, and she will let me pet her and set her on my leg. There is a blue Marans in the hatch that will let me do the same. The Basque roosters will hover around, but always make sure to stay out of reach. (although they like to bolt for the door of their enclosure when I try to enter or exit).

Hello again! a little while ago I posted on this thread about getting hatching eggs for this breed, and eveyone pointed me to Skyline. Today I have 6 big fat Basque babies and one more trying to get out of it's shell. I will only be keeping two pullets, but I can't wait to watch them grow and color out. :)

Here are my 4 roos, now 7 weeks old. Are #2 and 3 the more traditional color?
#1 darker wing, yellow legs

#2 - Speckled, but white legs

Another shot of roo 2:

Roo 3, speckled, yellowish legs

Roo 3 with roo 4 (right). These two did a weird thing today. Instead of chest-bumping, they seemed to have a neck wrestling match. They spun in circles doing this for quite a while:

More neck wrestling, roo 4 and 3

And here are updated photos of the girls:
Speckle girl:

Brownie (girl, correct?)

This third hen is round and smallish (and always moving, sorry so blurry):

Having a lot of fun with these chicks!

Great looking chicks! They grow so fast don't they.

I don't have a roo like your number one or a pullet like your number three. I will post pictures of my pullets today or tomorrow.

Roo #3 looks like he will be a nice color. #2 looks good too. you will have to keep an eye on both of them. And brownie looks like a wonderful girl. Her coloring is great.
The other girls look pretty nice too.
