Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Thanks! Greenfire Farms say on their information page that they imported their stock.

I guess they imported from Canada????

I assumed they imported from Spain since they imported a half dozen rare breeds from Europe every year. I guess things arn't always as they appear.
They imported them from Canada.

Yes, I emailed Greenfire this: "Hi
I'm researching Euskal Oiloas, Marraduna. I saw on your site that you imported your stock. Was this from the birds in Canada? I read that the Black Horse Ranch imported from Spain and that's where all the North America EO originated.

Any other info you have about the breeding stock would be helpful.
Thank you
Heidi"

They emailed back: "Canada, yes."

Thanks for the nice email and all the additional information. it kind of turned me off of them.

Yes, I requested additional information on Cream Legbars last fall and got a very short answer with even less actual information than what they provided to you on the OE's.

I was equally disenchanted.

Hi Everybody!

I could use some help as I really don't know what I'm going to do.....

My darlings are now 12 weeks old, eight boys and eight girls, and the delight of my heart. They run to greet me every morning....and love for me to sing to them each night. Oh yes, they are very spoiled, lol

So far there have been no problems with the roos and they are all gentle and seem to get along. But I know the time is coming when I will need to part with some. I could use some advice on how to find homes for them and what has worked for others who have had this problem...

My chickies came from James at Skyline....so they are the best of the best, lol
Thanks for any help.....

Are you going to keep a couple for breeding or selling hatching eggs?

Craigs list
Give them to a friend with a Farm or can have roos
find your local thread in the social section and see if someone wants the extras

Send them to freezer camp

You can put an add for them in the signature section of your profile. You can ship live birds. Make sure the buyer is willing to pay the shipping, especially if you give them away.

I gave away one Roo and pullet, so I have three roos to send to a new home.

I hope it works out for you!

Ron

I have several cockerels that are heading to freezer camp for various reasons - one is an aggressive little snot (the only one I had come out that way), and two have leg problems. The rest, if I can't find someone interested in a breeding trio, are heading for freezer camp. Cute as they are, they are dual-purpose birds for a reason, and I would rather put them in my freezer than send them off for someone else to do the same.

I sent two Red Star packing roosters to freezer camp last weekend. They had big thighs and drumsticks but small breast portions.

How old are your Basque when you process them?

These are my first basque, so it will be a bit of an experiment, but I usually let dual-purpose birds go until they are 16-20 weeks old.
Mine are 10 weeks old tomorrow, so I have six weeks to go, unless some one wants them.

They do seem to grow fast.

Thanks!

Ron
