Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.

I like the roo box idea but still don't think it's feasible with roosters who crow all day long and 5 neighbors who live right next to me.

Ron, it seems like you might have a secret to tame chickens. Meg's three standing together like that seem pretty impressive. What's your secret? Or is it something you're doing, Meg?

I've been holding mine everday, and sometimes they fall asleep, sometimes they never settle down. I would like them to be like pets as well, so am curious.

Yes, I am lucky! My neighbors like farm noises.

I have always had tame animals so I don't know. With the Basque it has a lot to do with the breed. Mostly they are friendly. One of the pullets will peck at my hand, but she does not hurt me. I think she is trying to communicate with me. I don't know what she is trying to tell me though. I need a chicken Whisperer..Chickens are very motivated by food, so when they are old enough start hand feeding them meal worms, Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and etc.

I hatched the little guys in Megan's picture and held them every day. They were always calm and friendly. The ones I still have are in a hutch and pen now and they hardly moved when I went by with the lawnmower. The same pen had Red Sar Cockerels, a Dorking cockerel and Partridge Rock chickens in it before and I thought they were going to kill themselves when I went by with the mower. The mower was off too.

The one Megan is getting tomorrow does not peck and is very nice. So far the only mean chicken was a Partridge Rock Cockerel he was getting to be a bit more friendly before he went to freezer camp.

Hi Laura,

Basque are fairly new to our Country and California. There is a group(three of four BYCrs) of us here with them, but most of us don't have them up to breeding age yet.

Mine will not be laying for seven weeks or so and I won't be able to hatch any chicks until the Fall.

Send a PM to me and I will start a list of people interested in getting them.

You could also get hatching eggs from Skyline if you want to hatch some for your self.

We worked on the hoop coop all day, and finally the Basque are in there! (Along with some other mixed breeds I hatched). It was a big push to finish, but the fox was a good motivator! I haven't seen him again, but I know he lives around here. We tried to make it very predator proof, with hardware cloth all over and an apron on the ground. Hope it works.

I'll have to get photos of them sometime soon.

so, just popped into the swedish flower hen thread. turns out one of my basque hens is a swede!!!!!!!!!!

i honestly don't know how it happened. there is a doc in our fair metropolis that LOVES to hatch, but lives in an HOA, so he gives all the chicks to this lady who has horse property and her kid does 4H, yada yada, so these chicks were all together in a big brooder. the SFHs were legbanded and i didn't buy the whole lot of basque until they were 3 weeks or so, so a band could have fallen off.........i don't know where the eggs came from

but i have a mille fleur SFH.

Ha! Funny story, pastrymama!

Naturespace, I will send hoop coop photos later! It is beautiful, although DH hates it. He hated building it, hates hardware cloth, etc. it still has some technical problems (roof leaks), but I think it is going to be fine.
I'm sure DH's view will soften over time. Ha! He loves those Basque chickens anyway!
