Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

A directory sounds great! The only difference I'd make is to start it as a thread in the breeders and hatchery section. That will help make it easier to find and keep track of. :D

Hey Ron....You are exactly right about some shade. Last year we had record heat and I went to Harbor Freight and bought shade cloths...like tarps...that block 60% of the sun and I droped the temp in my pens about 15 to 20 degrees...and that's alot to a chicken in 100 degree temps. I don't have any EO's yet.....mine are ordered from James (Hurry James...) but my black Chickens...Breese and Austrolops seem to stay as cool or cooler than my lighter colored chickens. Maybe they are just used to being hotter????? Anyway on all my new runs...I am putting up the shade cloth when I first build the pens because I KNOW it works.......Mike

Hi Mike,

Shade is very important along with fresh water. Feeding them oats or groats is supposed to help with heat too.

My Australorps did very well in the heat. Do you have black Breese? The ones I saw were white. Very different looking Breed. I am trying to get Heat Hardy breeds here. The record high here is 115 degrees and this year we had three heat waves with highs up to 109 in each heat wave. Last year was not as hot.

Bye,

Ron

I had two roos last week but had to process them. I could have shipped you one since the weather is cooler now.

I had them available in my signature line for a month but no one responded

I have a Black Rooster Breese I am breeding to Cream Legabr Hens (I lost my hen)....BressBars?????!!! I don't know...just playing with them right now. I have White Breese on the way. From the pictures it looks like they have a huge breast....and you can probably guess my affection for huge breasts.....way-off subject.....anyway. My White Cream Legbars seem to stress out from heat more than my Cream colored. I think the color of these OEs I have seen in Pictures may take the heat better than "White" birds which should in theory, reflect the heat off better???!!! That was the theory behind White Beehives and White Propane tanks.....whatever that has to do with raising chickens..........By the way.... I have read this whole thread and didn't I see somewhere where they think the Greenfire birds and Skyline's birds are all the same bloodline?

Pretty sure all North American EOs come from the same bloodline that was imported to Canada years ago unless someone else has imported them and not told anyone. I am almost certain it has been confirmed that both got theirs from the same line around the same time. Not sure who got them first out of the 2.

Hi Fellow Euskal Oiloa Fans!

Been awhile since I've been on the forums. Just joined the Euskal Oiloa forum too, but it's too much hassle to post pics there. I'm getting ready to set up breeding pens now that the girls are laying well. I kept three roosters that have different qualities. The first boy is El Cid "Cid". He is huge. Pros: Fastest to mature, beautiful full body and nice feathering; cons: wrong color (very smutty, black/white barring and white legs. He is also my sweetest boy. Cid is going in my egg layer flock in hopes that his male offspring will be big like him...and suitable for the freezer. Can only have so many roos

From Skyline eggs.

The next roo is Golden Boy. I love his coloring, correct leg and beak color, nice comb, but on the light weight side. He is going in breeding pen A . From Greenfire line.

And last but not least is Mardunn the rooster I believe may be hetero for barring. He has correct yellow legs/beak and deep red barring, but there isn't as much white as Golden Boy. Nice broad breast. He also has a little bit of smuttiness (gray) on his breast feathers. His comb is also on the small side and he is later maturing than the other two. He will be in breeding pen B. From Greenfire line.

The girls are all over the place in colors too. I've found the best (butterscotch yellow barred) come from the Skyline eggs, but there are also a lot of white legs and a single all white hen came from that batch of eggs too. My only Mille came from Greenfire. She is in the layer flock.

Yellow leg butterscotch barred i.e. proper maraduna color?

White leg maradunna hen.

White leg golden (butterscotch) and a smutty red maraduna hens.

Reddish hen.

Opinions? Thoughts on who should be bred to whom?

I'm stressing out over my roosters here. All the excess roos go to the butcher on Friday.

I've decided to keep 2 Basque, but just recently the dominant one has been chasing the other all over the place. He'll chase him relentlessly for several minutes, and then moments later, they are both eating out of the same dish. I've never kept 2 roosters, so I don't know if this is normal, or if it is something that will escalate until one kills the other. So far, no blood has been drawn, although one doesn't have many tail feathers left. I hope I'm doing the right thing :/ .

I know I can always get rid of one later. My biggest fear is that they will mortally wound each other and I'll be left with none.
